Minelab sold! (not my detector, the company!)

I just got back from the homebuilders show in Orlando. The dam Chinese are supplying building materials now. Crappy building materials..look good, but lousy materials.

That's the problem. Workmanship is ok, but materials are LOUSY. Hmmm..I seem to be stuck on the word lousy. Must be a Chinese computer.

trust me, i am in manufacturing and the company i work for has farmed out a few product lines to Chinese companies. the workmanship is horrendous. we spend as much time as it would take to build the stuff here repairing and checking the crappy merch we receive from them. whatever money they save initially they shell right back out to repair the mistakes the chinese workers made. that's American manufacturing for ya. ::)

I emailed Codan yesterday.....

I got to thinking about this when I heard the news. I was kind of concerned that Minelab was going the way of Fisher when it was acquired by First Texas. Now we have Bounty Hunters with Fisher decals on them!!! (Argue that point with me all you want, but you'll never catch me swinging a "Bounty Fisher"....I'll keep faith in my CZ-5 and 1236-X2!) Anyway, I put my concerns to Codan and received a reply from Mr. Peter Charlesworth, who is their Divisional General Manager for New Businesses. This is what he had to say:

Dear Sir,

please note that Codan has acquired Minelab as a stand alone business and intends on Minelab continuing as a separate division providing excellence in metal detection products.

It will be business as usual and you should expect the same high quality and service you have seen in the past from Minelab.

I trust this provides you the assurance you were seeking and good luck with your detecting!

Regards

It was good news to me if they're speaking with a straight tongue. Hopefully we won't see Chinese crap that has Minelab decals stuck to it!

I was concerened and contacted Minelab asking them how the acquisition would affect their detector business and got about the the same response from Minelab.

"Hi Marty,

We have been informed that it will be business as usual around here, so we will be continuing on as we have been.

I don't think anyone knows what the future will bring, but if anything, we may benefit from some of Codan's knowledge, as they manufacture similar high quality niche electronic products, which can only mean improvements in our product line down the track.

Thanks for your support.

You're the one! I think that we just found the source of our problem. (lol)

Interest topic!

I personally find it rather oddly suspicious Minelab sold out to Codan for a measely 70 million dollars!
I wonder if that amount is US or Aussie? Even given roughly 10% more, considering the exchange rate (1.07), the sale's price appears, to me at least much too low. I just hope Codan plans to build on to what Minelab has started.

I now see Cabellas is selling Minelab.

I wonder if this has something to do with it.

In 2005 Minelab bought Parketronics, a state of the art electronics manufacturing company in Australia.

Codan, who bought Minelab has been designing and building communications equipment for High Frequency (HF) Radio, Satellite and Digital Microwave Radio applications for close to 50 years.

I believe there is some major potential for Minelab metal detectors.
