i'm a newbie @mding and purchased a sovereign gt. i live on hutchinson island,fl and have been attempting to search the beaches. my problem is the erratic response from the gt in wet sand/surf. i run w/auto balance just off(full counter clockwise). i have tried all metal w/decreased sensitivity and iron mask off w/discrimination on. i can understand the scream of the surf when it hits the coil; but the other day i saw some rope on the surface; i got a slight bump in both modes. in the mess of rope was a 6" spoon w/3'0 hookup and an 8" rapala. if this machine can't detect this stuff on the surface of wet sand (no surf), how will i ever find any cobs or relics. after this episode, i went up to the duneline and found 3 pennies (1 wheat straw) @6-8".there just seems to be nothing but static in wet sand or nothing @ all. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks, keegah

The only "auto" switch on the GT is the Sensitivity control. If you click it out of auto then it is running at the highest sensitivity and decreases as you turn it clockwise. So, you have been running it at the highest level of sensitivity which is too high for saltwater beaches. You are getting lots of false signals with it that high. Try slowly backing off (turning it clockwise) until the falsing goes away. I use mine on the beaches of SC and run my sensitivity setting at about 11 o'clock or so. What you need might vary some but you are way too high right now. Also, I would recommend hunting in discriminate mode with notch at lowest setting and discrimate at lowest setting. You may elect to have iron mask on or off but I leave mine on. And one last thought is to check your coil cover. There may be sand between it and the coil and I hear that can cause falsing. lets jusy try this................seeing as how you have the best beach detector going at this moment.

many years ago i bought sovereign x2pro and kept it until this past nov and i still think it was a great machine.

like jerry said loose the auto............i have a wot on my gt and certain areas of va beach i pick up radio signals (that is what i call them) certain hotels have these antennas on them and when i get just abreast of them i start to get what sound like radio or tel. chatter.............so 99% of the time i run in sensitivity at NOON - or 11 and it goes tooo deep for an old guy like me. - u may have to lower or raise it some, depending on your beach.......................remember as u turn this dial towards auto, it strenthens the sensitivity (counter clockwise) - SO JUST BEFORE IT CLICKS INTO AUTO -IT IS WIDE OPEN..............that is why most set it around 11 to 12 or 1

i like to hear the threshold over the waves since i hunt in the water and shallow waves area, (they are very noisy to me) so i keep the threshold around 2pm so i can hear it each time it encounters something.

notch - zero

descrimination - zero

now go find some loot

done deal

remember now - no auto

AND LIKE JERRY SAID - CHECK COIL FOR SAND AND WATER TRAPPED INSIDE, BETTER YET, THROW THAT DAMN PIECE OF JUNK COVER IN THE TRASH CAN.

Listen to Max, the amount of finds that man posts is fantastic, he knows what he is talking about.

Max I would love to trade you beaches, I have been knocked on my butt at Daytona more times then I like to admit, and that isn't counting the times I have slipped off the back of the sand bars searching the back trough trying to avoid a wave only to find myself under water.6 lb scoop and 5 lb Excal with straight shaft makes it hard to get back up.......LOL

Drowning is not an option.
