Metal Detecting
I was just wondering if you guys who have been metal detecting forever or at least a year or many years, still dig modern pennies?

Or do you just ignore the penny signals?
Being a newbee, of course I dig all pennies, and happy to do so. But I can see how that could all change, after digging 1000 holes and realize for my sometimes extreme efforts I now have $10.00.

Just wondering.

I still dig them all. For me, it is about the discovery of what I have found. lol, That might all change when I find my first gold coin.

Those old Indian head pennies usually register/disc out at the same point as a modern zinc penny.
So if your at an old site you should definitely dig them.

It's my understanding a $2.5 gold quarter eagle comes in around a zinc penny. I cant confirm. ....

I'll see if I can find the story.

Edit: seems $2.5 gold comes up low, I'll keep looking for what I thought I read lol.

Wow.....from your comments it appears I will continue joyously digging pennies on and on.
My grandson has stated, "well papa, it's better to find a penny than a pull tab". Smart kid.

It depends on my mood and what the site offers. Mostly in parks if it's one I've largely cleared the dime and quarter signals from and I'm in a "dig it all mood", I'll go for pennies. I've found silver earings, rings, chains, brass rings, and other goodies all of which rang up in the zinc to copper range.

Now the argument still lends credence to the sheer number of pennies versus other targets in that range but, hey, if im up for it, as previously stated, it's the thrill of the find.

Texas tiger digs on YouTube made a good point in one of his videos that in his short hunts he strives for a goal of good non-trash targets and if the goal is met, it's a successful hunt.
In his case he strove for 10 targets.

A good low-key mentality for those who just like to get out there and kill some time swinging.

The machine is not smart enough to tell you "for sure" that the target is a zinc cent. Yeah, I dig hands full of them, but every once in a while, a good target comes out of the ground. If you want to find good stuff, you have to dig holes, lots of holes!

I gladly go behind others and dig the signals that they don't.

Yeah larger gold class rings can fall out up there too.
Since I'm no expert yet, I still dig them all. But I have heard that large class rings can fall out near zinc penny, so I'm not taking the chance.
Yup just confirmed with the pics someone uploaded for men's rings with vaq and compadre that the large ones fell out at same area of zinc

I don't own these pictures and can't for the life of me remember who posted them but look at where the rings came in...

In certain areas I dig it all, even a null. Still learning the new Etrac and find coin mode will grab the best signal when hunting in fast and deep on. But those trashy parks can be very demoralizing due to the over abundance of signals. I tend to probe as it is a much more enjoyable hunt. Im not going deep, or tearing up turf or my back. I get many more good finds hunting fast this way. But yes there are goodies hidden by a bad signal. I usually hunt with my pin pointer in my free hand, as I dig that fast. I dont even bother to turn it off. When I do dig I scan the area for any nearby signals as I will dig two or three targets at a time. Penny signals do hide other coins and rings and such. I really dont like discrimination, but yes I will disc out pennies at some point on a very long hunt. I try for 100 coins a hunt, but dont always come close to that. Learning to dig and swing with both hands as a arm will get tired is also another trick, if your gonna dig pennys. Now modern clad goes into main pouch with trash. Gold and silver go into a small container. I sort the coins through out the day and place them in a ziplock bag I keep for sudden rain burst for my cell phone. I have large coffee cans to keep my junk, there is some keepers in the junk when you get time to clean and sort it. Now if I had a way to film some of my hunts. I just dont have three hands to operate a camera.

Good stuff guys....like getting more education in MD. I thank you for responding.

I wish I remembered who posted those pics. They definitely deserve the credit for the work they did into them. :-(
But yeah you never know really. It just takes time of digging trash to figure it out I guess. But if I can stand it this year instead of thumbing the disc, I'm just going to knock out small iron and dig everything else that's repeatable both ways and maybe even some iffy ones. I want some gold!!

Cascade I like your idea of swinging with both arms. I messed up the tendons in my arm last year from only using my right. Going to definitely try using my left, but gonna be awkward at first

I swing with right approx 60% and right 40%. When I get more coordinated with the left, I hope to turn the numbers around. Arthritis is right hand is much worse.
So it appears I'm not alone with this problem.

Here you go.
Today's lunchtime hunt at a local sports field.
Guess which 2 precious metal targets both rang in the penny range. One zinc range one copper range.

Wow...how nice. Penny signals rule.
If you don't mind sharing, which of your detectors were you using?

These were found on the deus:

18khz
Full tones
1 disc
1-40 notch
70 sens (remember I was going only for probe-able targets
React 3
Silencer 0
Audio response 3
TX 1

I was really hoping you would say Compadre or Gamma 6000.
The Deus is probably your go-getter MD.

For park hunts it's either the v3i or the deus. The deus is a little more docile looking than the v3i so I tend to use it when hunting along side other park patrons. If the field isn't crammed with targets and not many people around I'll use the v3i.
Truthfully any of those machines would've picked these up but the compadre user would've struggled big time with the sheer abundance of targets many of which junk along the sidelines.

The deus with modulated audio also allows for audio depth feedback (and does a better job of it than the v3i) which is important if you don't want to dig or dig deep due to onlookers. The v3i is very accurate with its numerical depth estimation though.

I've never hunted around people yet. Expect to soon, on a beach trip.
Meanwhile, it's good to see you still dig pennies.
