modified Bullseye?

A couple of days ago an old timer was giving up some good tips and he showed me his Bulleye pinpointer that he said he had modified by turning a potentiometer inside to make it much more sensitive. I cannot remember if it was a Bullseye or Bullseye II. Are any of you familiar with this mod? Does the mod work with other pinpointers? Are there pinpointers out there that would work as well without a mod? He said that without the mod you had to almost touch the coin to get a reaction from the pinpointer and that after the mod you can get a reaction 4 inches from the coin.

i could be wrong in my logic, but i dont really want 4 inches on a pinpointer.i would much rather have 1-1/2 inches so that i can ..........well.......pinpoint my target. anything more than an inch or so and now you have a search coil that can pick up other targets besides the one you are trying to pinpoint. thats just me though. others may prefer a deeper seeking pinpointer.

Well, with my Bullseye II, I could never crank the sens. all the way up without it becoming unstable. SO in a way, I could make it more sensative, but the circuitry couldn't handle it... so I would think that even more sensativity would make it even more unstable...

I had a problem with my Bullseye when I got it 3 years ago, It would go off in the air. Contacted Whites and they showed me how to adjusted the sensitivity so that it would detect from about 1/2 to 1 inch from the target and not go off when moved around. I would think the adjustment for the mod would be a gain adjustment. By making the unit hotter you probably make it too sensitive and it would be eratic. Just my thoughts. If you are electronically inclined the way to correct the problem with the mod on the Bullseye II is by filtering. I would find it hard to believe that Whites has not tested the unit and tweaked it for maximum performance to begin with.

You guys have a very valid point. Beyond a certain detection distance a pinpointer fails to be a pinpointer! While the 4 inches might well be exaggerated, the point is that the Bullseye can be modified to a certain extent.
The old timer I referred to was obviously far more efficiently hunting than I, a newbie without a pinpointer. He was using a DFX and I observed that when he got a good signal he wasted very little time pinpointing with his detector. Instead he used the pinpointer and dug what I thought was a very small diameter hole. When I asked about the pinpointer he said that it was "tweaked" for more sensitivity and that if you had to send it to White's for repair that they would return it with the sensitivity turned back down.
All I really know is that he claimed to prefer his Bullseye be set different than the factory setting.

Did some testing on my Bullseye last night. It appears to work better than I expected. When adjusting the pot I noticed if you had it turned on the unit alarmed in the air after only a little adjustment , if left off and adjusted I could set it at the min and max settings and the unit worked OK. The ranges of detection for a clad quarter was 1/2" to 1 1/2", about what you would expect. The unit did not false signal. I did notice that at the edge of detection the signal was not sharp and was raspy until the target got closer. I set mine to about 1" but on larger items it appears to detect deeper , about 2" on an aluminum can. Just some observations.

Does the Bullseye II detect to an equal or greater distance? Being externally adjustable for sensitivity and having the option of vibrating rather than beeping makes this an attractive alternative. Or does it just vibrate and beep at the same time?
