Moon suspender clip?

found this down about 6 inches at an old boarding house from the 1800's, the left side of it underneath has teeth much like a suspender clip...any ideas on this and how old? It is a little bit bigger than a quarter.

That happened to Procter & Gamble, soap mfgrs. (See logo below.) However, I don't think this item is P&G related.
