More garage sale sterling and antique fly rod!

Last Saturday was a pretty crappy day weather wise. But a local lake community still held their shoreline drive yard sales. Boy am I glad we went. The very first sale we picked up an antique midwife bench for $5.00. A nice antique cranberry scoop for $5.00. But the best one was a box full of a glass vanity set and some miscellaneous stuff. The seller said they were nice pieces and wanted $40 for the box lot but would take $30. I couldn’t pull my money out fast enough as I saw the sterling mark and knew it was a good deal. It was a three piece set made by R Blockinton in Attleboro, mass. They were pretty crusty but polished up well. I actually just sold them yesterday for $150. Another sale I picked up a beautiful bamboo fly rod. It’s the “Kosmic” made by the US Net & Twine Co. the serial number places it to about 1897-98. That one set me back a bit. $10.00!! [emoji38]. It’s a $200-400 rod all day but I’m really thinking of keeping it. I’ve done some fly fishing here in Ct and you just don’t find those rods every day. Especially at $10. My wife also picked up this nice vintage heavy gauge clam basket for $15. Not a bad rainy day!!

You found some real gems! I love that rod, but I don't recommend getting it wet, unless it's been actively used recently. Cool stuff.

Really like all of those. The glass and sterling set cleaned up beautifully; good eye seeing past all that tarnish! I never see stuff like this down here in Georgia.

There's just something about early american primitives that make them so interesting. I can read history books all day and be mildly interested but hand me something the colonists used and you have my complete attention in a second.

I agree. It’s what I refer to as physical history. Let me hold something in my hands or open something up and I geek out big time! If you’re thinking of the cranberry scoop, it’s actually made of plywood and dates to probably the 1920’s.

Any of the items would get that response out of me but the clam basket, cranberry scoop, early pewter dishes, silver pieces, woven baskets, whale bone items, etc..... It really gives you an idea of how tough life was at the birth of our country, or even many years before, but how resourceful they were. Its a physical manifestation of their determination to succeed in spite of the odds. Pretty much the embodiment of the American spirit.

Well said BigC. If you haven’t been to the Brimfield Mass antique show & flea market, I would highly suggest it. Some of the dealers displays are like going to a museum.

I've always wanted to attend but the date of it conflicts with our trip to Cape Cod. We usually leave in mid to late June and stay through the 4th of July. Brimfield happens before and after we are out that way. Someday ill make the trip there just for the flea market.
