Panel cover from something maybe? Possibly an older electrical junction box? It would seem that screws went into the several holes and mounted it to something else.

I'm leaning towards a filter cover of sorts. With the "U" shaped openings it would have been a pressure pot type cover. The "U" shapes were where the "dogs" or hold down bolts would be. The center piece would be for a sample port of gauge...

Now, about the other holes... Not sure... :dontknow:

I just saw the penny. Its some kind of pressure seal cover.

There just aren't a lot of pictures of pressure pot covers out there for me this morning! I didn't look too hard though! ;D

Here is an example of what BigCy and I are talking about... Not exactly like yours, but same basic configuration.
