my neighbor has a 1897 morgan dollar that he wants to sell. It is in EXCELLENT condition. he wants 20 bucks. What do You think. I don't know much about cain values.

1897 what ? What Mint? The Denver mint is worth more at the higher grades.
Excellant means nothing until a grade can be determined.
2007 red book lists VF-20 starting at 18-20 depending on Mint.
Silver prices have been high,so could be worth more.
Ultimately the decision is what is it worth to you- I usually buy high and sell low-- LOL
I don't advise other people to do that!!!

1897 O is the one to look for in the higher grades. 20 bucks is OK for any of 'em. 97, 97O, or 97S.
The mintmark is on the back, under the wreath.

Even if its not, 20 bucks is still OK. the 97 and the 97S might retail for as low as 15, but what's it matter? 5 bucks? This is not an investment coin anyways, so if ya want it, go for it.

Stud: Month old Coin World show Dealer selling 97-0 in EF for $25. 97-S in EF = $20. So, I guess $20 is an average amount!

Unless there are condition problems, go for it

Heck It's worth twenty bucks to me just to be able to hold in my hand and admire it.

But in your case Stud564. You might just want to use that $20 to buy some dang reading glasses. HH
