Metal Detecting
Hit an area of the park this morning I never paid much attention too in the past. First target was the 1936 mercury dime. Next target was a 1916 Buffalo nickel. Followed that with a couple of Indian head cents(1884 and 1906) and then the spot went cold. Crossed the street to an area around a big old tree. First target was a deep one that kind of hit a little higher and to the right of nickel on the smart screen. Dug down about 8 inches and I popped a small circular object out of the ground. At first glance I thought it was a charm but when I brushed off some dirt and saw III on the reverse I almost crapped myself. After 27 years of swinging a coil, I had just dug my first nickel three cent piece, an 1865. I can finally cross that one off my wish list. I followed that one up with a deep semi-key 1871 Indian head cent that I nailed with my digger ! In the same general area I then dug the 1910 and 1911 V nickels. Finished off the morning with a no date Buffalo nickel. The four nickels bring my old nickel total for the year to 51 with one shield, 16 V's, 26 Buffaloes and 8 silver war nickels. Usually August is my worst detecting month of the year but this August is shaping up to be one of my best !!!
