I went out for a little early evening hunt. It only lasted about a half hour before I had to leave. With each swipe of the coil I would stir up mosquitoes! By the time I couldn't take it anymore, I had a huge cloud dive bombing me. I had to literally run back to the car. I guess I better lather myself down with deet the next time. Unless anyone knows a more effective mosquito repellent.

They have been awful hereabouts the last three years. I have come to love Badger Bug Balm as a preventative measure. It really seems to keep them off and doesn't melt plastics and eyeballs like the Cutter's 100% DEET I had useg previously. Actually smells nice.

DEET is the only thing that works down here. Florida bugs play rough - you slap 'em, and they slap you back.

Friend of mine hust returned from a trip to Florida. He has been diagnosed with West Nile. Use deep woods off. I carry it with me all summer.

I hear ya, I pretty much got chewed up tonight. I think they thought my OFF mosquito spray was cool aid. Where about are you from? Here in the Flathead we have standing standing water everywhere from all the rain, might be a bad mosquito year.

I am in the Tennessee Valley area. We are nothing but rivers and lakes creeks and streams. Lots of floods. It is the tiger mosquito that have moved in and giving me fits.

I am in Bozeman and I think your cousins are here.

Here in Northern California I ride my bike to work 8 miles often see from 3 to a max of 9 dead birds west nile is deadly deet and check your property for free standing water in bird baths, tires and the like to keep them away. In Panama they have inspectors check your property for free standing water that they breed in. West Nile Another wonderful gift from the middle east.

Usually I just use a bug jacket and some bug spray, but this year the bugs are crazy. From now to the end of summer I'll be camping out in northern Ontario, Canada. Wish me luck.

Three of them had my dog down, in the back yard, trying to decide weather to eat him there, or take him into the woods!!!

Gotta back ya up guy... I too use Deep Woods Off and it seems to work great for me also (buy stock in it). But I live here in TN. with you. I've had Rocky Mountain tick fever TWICE!!!! But that was years ago and I NOW don't fool around with the light spraying. This may sound stupid or excessive but here's what I do. TICKS are the biggest problem here. I spray my bare feet, ankles and calves. I then spray my socks. I then spray my shoes. After that I use the rest of the can (75%) on everything else.... EVERYWHERE! I'm very fortunate to live high on this ridge top with little standing water around and few mosquitos. But down lower the war is on!!!!

Now we have a new added virus to worry about- chicken something or other !
The guy next to us has a pool that looks like a swamp with the cover in it, and it's all green!
They are on vacation, so I guess I'll be adding something to his pool!

Thanks for all of the great ideas! I feel your pain. This summer I think is gonna be bad for mosquitoes. Wet here up North, can't imagine what it is like down south in the wet areas.

Limitool I agree with you. Our Daughter-in-law had Lyme disease last year.
I have a two edge sword in my life (besides Murphy!) 3 years ago I had an anaphylactoid reaction to an unknown substance that was in the air (had a smell, taste, and could feel it coat my skin) just driving by, ended up in the ER.
Allergist thinks it was a lawn or pest chemical. Soooo, I'm doomed either way! Damn you Murphy!
Who says life doesn't get exciting as you get older! :laughing7:

I traveled to Montana about 5 years ago in the summer. I couldn't believe how bad the mosquitoes were. HORRIBLE!!! I don't know what's worse the mosquitoes or the ticks. Either way your doomed. Spray and don't go lightly. This meaning... SPRAY!!! You may smell like a walking can of OFF but that's the whole point. And chiggers and seed ticks aren't any fun either. I guarantee you that one good dose of chiggers and 3 weeks of scratching will teach you what to do (or not to do). Been there / done that. Many others have also... I"LL BET!!!!! Strip naked, spray and spray the layers going back on!

Puff on a nice fat cigar when you go out detecting, every little bit helps.Smoke annoys them.

Very few of the critters here. Don't know why either. I've been eaten up with them out on the desert where there is apparently no water, but locally in wet western Oregon we haven't been bothered. On a trip to Idaho, in the deep woods I was doing pretty good, sprayed myself with OFF, and wasn't being bothered. Then nature called and I bared my butt. OMG, there were skeeters on top of skeeters with sharp beaks, and dull beaks, poking and sticking, diving and drilling, a situation I never want to encounter again. If someone had videoed it, I'm sure it would have been a winner on "America's Funniest Home Videos."

Use DEET or that Skin so Soft repellent. They work great and smell ok. Place on your clothes also. Garlic tabs also work although your breath and underarms will smell like Garlic.

In the mountains of central Idaho.... I only use DEET, 100% Deet, It might melt plastic, but it keeps away the bugs, for hours, even when you sweat and get covered in dirt.

I'm glad I saw this thread, the skeeters are the worst we have had in a long time. Also there is a tick that has been migrating called The Lone-Star Rick and I got one of them on me last year. The reaction to the bite can be horrible, causing the victim to have severe allergic reactions to red meat and even death after innocuously eating beef and not realizing it. Has anyone tried any essential oils like eucalyptus for mosquitos?
