Today's my birthday and decided to take a couple hours to hunt an off the beaten path park today. Got a crunchy wheatie signal. 7 inches down pops a merc. I was so confused but absolutely pumped at the same time. This is my first ever mercury dime! 1918 P. I also dug a silver plated compact.

This compact was sealed shut. Of course we have to open it right??? There's gotta be gold inside. Pop the compact with a screwdriver and a little help from a hammer. No coins but there's yet another compartment. OH YEAH!

Pry open this internal lid to see this:

Pull apart the makeup pads to finally discover the mirror:

No gold coins but it was neat to open up this little time capsule from (im guessing) early 1900's.

This was a short but satisfying hunt. Thanks for the bday gifts, Mother Nature!

Happy Birthday, and congrats on your first Merc.

Congrats on the b day silver that's a pretty early merc too. I love finding those and especially the earlier dates! I have an AT Max which is a pretty similar machine. It's important to know the following but see for yourself as you detect: Numbers like 77-81 could be a penny, but an 80-81 could be a silver dime so it's good to dig all signals. To confound things more I think that certain Spanish silvers can ring up lower than a penny you never know what will come out. A lot of it is a guessing game so I dig almost anything that is a repeatable signal that has the high tone in it.

Put that first merc in a nice coin hoplder congrats. Thats funny I dont know how many compacts and lip stick tubes Ive pried open looking for bills or whatever always just the old goose egg O notta Happy Birthday my friend!!!!!!!Tommy

Thank you for the bday wishes everyone. Finding that merc was almost as good as my birthday "cake"...literally a ribeye steak with a candle stuck in it. Perfection!
