In 1854 the largest gold nugget ever found was in California at Carson Hill above the Stanislaus River. It weighed 195 pounds .

Thats right Saxon, and who knows if there was bigger peices broke and sold before that. The Carson Nugget was melted and sold at spot!!! .My greatgrandfather, grandfather, and Uncle all mined at Carson Hill and One of my really good freinds owns it now

Actually that Carson Hill piece was a specie, not a nugget......and Vini there were many, many nuggets and specie bigger than 26 lbs found in California over the last 160 years.......Dave

Dave knows more history of Carson Hill than anybody on here!!And Yea 26 lbs is a nice chunk but was not uncommon back in the day.Whats the JamesTown Specie?44 lbs I think

I stand corrected.
Thanks for the expertise.
Guess I read that article a little too fast.

It says: "It's the largest surviving gold nugget ever discovered in the Western hemisphere," said David Herskowitz, director of natural history for the auction house.

(emphasis added)

So that statement obviously has some qualifiers.

Meanwhile, I'm dreaming REALLY BIG now, anyway, ha, ha!

http://www.ironstonevineyards.com/ this if this link works from the winery in Murphys,Calaveras county,Ca. they own and displat the over 40 lb specie found at the Sonora mining companies Jamestown mine in the 1980's,an unknown but great amount was lost to the crusher from this surviving piece.......Dave

The largest ever found was the Welcome Stranger found in Australia in 1869 at 210 lbs. Biggest still around today is the Hand of Faith at over 61 lbs. It was also found in Australia and is on display at the Golden Nugget Casino in Vegas.

I have a brief write up on the two, as well as a couple others at: http://www.blackcatmining.com/reference/largest-nugget.cfm

Still, 26 lbs is nothing to sneeze at! I certainly wouldn't complain. :)

The Oates family has had the fever for a while now but trying to top relatives find is impossible---but I keep on a trying-John ;D

I just thought I would add a picture of the "Jamestown",specie found in the 1990's.It is presently on display at Ironestone Vineyards in Murphys Calif
