I've seen little balls of Mercury act and look like that --- but the fact that they are gold in color is odd. Do they squish and break into more balls when you touch them?

Probably from a meteor impact that melted them and formed them into shot before they landed.

The last thing I would ever do would take a small bead and heat it in a metal pan over a flame. And since I'd never do it I wouldn't worry about standing upwind while not performing such a task. Hg
