I just purchased these two coins for $100, and am thinking about having them graded. Do you think I should? And if so, PCGS or NGC? Do you think the coins grade on its holder is acurate to the coin? Thanks!

Well they definitely aren't prooflike, and I don't believe either one would make ms65. I wouldn't bother having them graded, both are common dates. Nice coins regardless.

The 84 -O is the closest to being proof like, but it isn't. It would grade a solid 63. Perhaps, it might push for a 64. If you want to educate yourself on proof like coins, study the 81-S. Nearly all the 81-S's are spectacular and have proof-like surfaces. Finding one without is more the exception. They are the one Morgan that I can't seem to say no to. Despite have multiples specimens, I keep adding another whenever one meets my expectations.

They would sell for about $45 each good luck

Look up what either of the coins is selling for on ebay unslabbed in MS-63. My best estimate would be $40-45 each.

$100 for both? or each? For both, you made a good deal. The '85 is a solid 63. If you are able to get a deal such as at a coin show in submitting for grading, then that would be the way to go. Paying full submission will be hard to recoup the investment. I would put the 84-O as the better buy. Morgan collectors who focus on New Orleans mint coins know that upper grade examples are rarer than the RedBook suggests. New Orleans was never known for high quality so consequently when they are discovered on the secondary market, they can earn a substantial premium especially if there are others competing for the same coin.

Maybe its the lighting I took the pictures in. They don't look ms63 in person. I'll try and get better pictures up.

Overpaid.. in my opinion. The top one definitly is not a MS 65.. probably 61 at best. The bottom is more Proof like, but not enough that one of the top 4 would honor. Personally I see a 63-64 there.
