Relic Hunting

This property was likely developed around 1870 - 80 and probably burnt down in the 1930's, as the farmer who works this land can't remember there ever being a structure here. I can easily tell where the house was located and there was obviously a small barn or drive shed about 50 yards east of the house. The property owners father owned the property directly west of here (which still stands today) and it dates to the 1850's. The finds of interest yesterday were an 1881 LC, a fancy horse buckle, the animal bell and a 'holed' 1865 IH. But what has me really curious is the brass relic pictured last, it looks to have been in the fire as well.

This 'mystery' piece of brass has fancy etching and a decorative border, it also looks to have been made for personal use... but for what I don't know? :dontknow:

Any help would be appreciated,
Dave

Maybe a latch/lock cover to a small box? Just guessing.

miniature saddle for a brass horse. JK. Good hunt. I have to agree I think you have a latch for a box or something similar.

A book clasp?
Neat finds ,congrats!

Not a latch due to the action on the pivot point on the other side. A latch would have some sort of hinge, and that's not present here. It has a rivet with washer. That would only allow it to rotate on its axis, precluding a latch. I think it may be one side of a small leather handle.
