and its in worse condition than my first. The only reason I think this is a large cent is because its the right size and made of copper. I found it at one of my old home sites and it was at about 3 inches. It came out of the ground very encrusted with the dark greenish brown patina but I could tell then that I would be lucky to see any detail. I tried the hot peroxide method after soap/water and it still failed to show any detail. I next made the decision to try electrolysis and still can't make out any distinguishing marks. Oh well ... maybe someday I will find one with some detail and a readable date ( its still a thrill to dig one though ... even if I can't read it) ... thanks for looking ~ Jimmy

Very nice find, my favorite coin.
Good luck on your next large

Congrats, Jim. And I feel your pain -- I've dug three LCs so far, and two look about as bad as yours, while the third has some slight detail yet no date. It's a pain! The ground is not kind to copper.....

Cheers,
B

Better than any I've ever found. :(

Look at the bright side. Even if you screw up the electrolysis you won't hurt it much. Great one to use for first tests!

Congrats! Still looking for my #1.

That's too bad, but still a great find. I guess you can't really hurt it much. Give this a try; Dissolve table salt in a glass with some vinegar and soak it in there, stir it around every once in awhile, maybe leave it overnight, that works OK on copper. If that doesn't work, someone once told me soaking it in strong "hot"sauce overnight also cleans coins. Just some ideas, might be worth a try....

Congrats Jimmy ! I have one just like that one.

Nice dig. Maybe you could help with a little advice for me. I have a large piece something like that, the only thing is it is so incrusted with ruct and corrosion I am afraid of trying to flake any of it off. SHould I just leave it or what? Thanks for any info for this beginner.

Hello Gary60 ... first let me welcome you to TNet ... there are several methods to help clean up your find ... my recommendation is to check out the Cleaning & Preservation part of this forum at http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/board,70.0.html and try the method that you think will work best for your find: it may be the heated peroxide method, olive oil soak method, electrolysis, etc ... good luck and post a photo of your find as it is now and then post one after you've cleaned it up so we can check it out ... good luck ~ Jimmy

Hey Dave ... good to see you here at Tnet ... the band is going pretty good with a couple of gigs each month ... my son is doing very well with his acoustic thing and is playing 1-2 times per week ... hope all is going well with you (if you can believe it ... 70 degrees here the past few days and I haven't been able to get out for a bit of hunting yet) ... take care ~ Jimmy

i have a few like that too. sometimes that just the way it goes. :'( still a nice find.

Great find! You are helping eastern NC look like a great detecting area. Hope you find a way to pull a little detail off of it. Happy Hunting.

Congrats on your second large cent find, I'm still hunting for my first one.
