:dontknow: My brother in law owns 130 acres here in central Texas which I hunt on with my grand kids. There is a creek that runs thru it that is full of rocks and is dry most of the time. It is about a1/8-1/4 mile long. I went up to the upper end and dug out in front of a rock. I did not go all the way to bed rock, as it started raining and the rocks were getting slick. I only had tennis shoes on and did not want to bust my A$$. I panned, my first attempt, 2 pans full and still have one to go. Out of the two pans I got this much or more black sand. Do you think I should persue digging a little deeper and work my way down the creek? Here is a picture of the black sand that is on the end of a car retriver magnet. :help:

The only place I've ever herd of gold in Texas was in Fredricksburg, out by Enchanted rock.

They find gold in Tx in several areas. The most popular is at the Illano.Black sand can hide flour gold in just a teaspoon of black sand.Pan it real good with patience. You may even want to crush your black sand and pan again.Black sand is usually present wherever gold is but gold is not always where black sand is.Goodluck.

yep id go to bedrock/false bedrock/clay layer, if possible. thats where the gold will drop to when it floods

:coffee2: my brother in laws place is in Comal County- ie New Braunfels area?? I was thinking this is the last Sunday of deer season ( does and spikes only). My blind runs along the creek and after next month I will go back and dig down, with work boots on and find bed rock. I have never panned before and I think I have finally figured it out. :icon_thumright: :dontknow:

Rennie,

You are about 80 miles south and a little east of Llano, so it maybe possible that there maybe some gold in your area, if there is it is most likely fine gold, the only way to find out is to sample all along the creek/stream, look for any bedrock on the banks that is running down into the water/creekbed, in these areas dig out any material that you can find stuck in the cracks and crevices of the bedrock in and out of the water, the gold if any will be down in the bottom of the cracks, use a crowbar and break open the cracks to get as much material out of the cracks as you can, a thin flat tip screwdriver, a piece of wire with the end bent at 90 degree, a turkey baster to suck out material, a stiff brush, etc., anything that you can think of to get the material out will aid you in your quest to see if there is any gold there.

For fine gold it is best if you classify the material into different sizes before panning, you can start with 1/4" hardware cloth, and then windows screen, and then a flour sifter(make sure you use your wife's or sister's old flour sifter and not her new one!!), after classifying, pan the different sizes separately, any gold when panned properly will be one of the last things in your pan, if you do find gold start using a safety pan and pan the material at least 2 to 3 times to get all the fine gold.

Good luck and let us know if you find any gold!!
