Detector(s) used
Fisher 1280x Minlab E-Trac Garrett Pinpointer
Hi gang.
I had always thought about going to a local club to search their lawn and, finally thought I would stop to ask if they would mind if I searched for a little while. I went up to the guy mowing the lawn and, asked him if it would be ok to use my medal detector in the back yard. He smiled and, said sure anytime. Then he asked me what I was trying to find. I said "oh I"m just looking for maybe some wheat pennies or a silver dime or two" ( all the time thinking I would love to find some silver )
He just smiled and chuckled a little and went back to mowing the yard while I got all my gear out of the truck. It seems the older I get the more gear I need. You know gloves ( golf gloves work the best ),knee pads ( so my old knees can take it ), pouch with sharp knife, and of course my pinpointer ( garrett ).
It seems when I was younger I would just go and get wet, muddy, and dirty
( and like it ). Now, I have to make sure I do not get to dirty or,cut on any glass. lol
Finally, after a few minutes I'm walking to the back of the yard with a nice gentle
breeze blowing off the lake. I turn on my Etrac and do a quick noise cancel, and am ready to start swinging the coil. As I look to my left now there are three guys watching me as they walk up to see my detector and stuff. The one guy tells me if I try the other side of the yard I might have better luck because "his buddy" has already cleaned out this part of the yard two years ago. Asking what all he found I'm told that he found lots of coins.
Now, trying my best not to get down I thought his buddy might have left a few things I said thank you and, kept swinging my coil where the swings used to be. It could not have been 3 minutes and, there was that nice middle high tone that on my Etrac means usually a copper penny. I cut a small plug and popped it back to see a wheat penny looking at me.
Of course, they all had to see what I had found and proudly I said a nice little wheat penny, and smiled. I take a few more steps and again I hear that nice middle high tone and, again pop out a 2nd wheat penny.
Now, I am thinking this might be better then I thought and, told them another wheat penny. And, watch as they have already grown bored and went back to finish their yard work.
So, I start to work a nice tight pattern and kept hitting wheat pennies and, a few clad coins. I was trying to cherry pick what might be there. It was not too long and
::) there is that sweet high tone that means one of two things. Either, a silver dime with my reading of 12/45 or a piece of can. Making sure, to cut the plug a little wider and, a little deeper so, as not to scratch anything if it was a keeper.
About 5" down the garret pinpointer is screaming and vibrating like crazy and, I carefully pop the knife behind where it is telling me and out pops a 41 merc ;D
Dropping it into my pouch I am all smiles for I have not been here 15 minutes and I have already got silver. Yes, this is going to be a good day.
I start to work my pattern again and hit a few clad dimes and, then a few more wheat pennies. When there is that sound "again" ( the one that stops ya in your tracks ) looking down there is the numbers again 12/45. After pinpointing I cut a plug this time to be met with a big root right in the middle of my plug. :'( I start to work the dirt away from both sides of the root trying my best to get all of the dirt out so, I can get to what is under the root.
After about 5 minutes of being very careful out pops a 42 merc. ( silver #2 ) ;D This is going to be a very good day. ( it may not be old but it is are silver ) Looking down at my watch I see I have been here about 40 minutes and have a nice little pile of clad, wheat pennies, and now two silver dimes.
I have about another 80 minutes or so before I have to leave to get to work. Trying to make sure I get the most bang for my buck I watch, listen, and read the meter to get as many keepers as I can before I have to leave. Knowing that I would be able to come back tomorrow to work the area again.
Walking right up to where there are a couple of big trees I get a high tone and, a reading of 12/47 on the Etrac I get a little excited for knowing this could be a silver quarter. Again, taking the extra time to cut a bigger and deeper plug ( about 4" square ) I lay the plug back and there sitting at 5" is a 1963 Washington quarter. ;D ( silver #3 )
So far, I have been racking up the clad quarters and dimes and, now three silver coins. I am super happy with what this short little hunt has given me. I look down and, see it's time to start to work back to the truck ( we all know that means about 20 minutes or so lol even though the truck is less then 100 yards away ).
I keep cherry picking the numbers and tones while working my way back out, when out pops another 12/45 reading but the tone is bouncing and, only able to get it one way. After reading all of the posts and, Andy's book I think this could be a dime with junk or on edge. So, I try to pinpoint it but, it will not let me. Taking the 6" coil I use ( 95% of the time ) I wiggle it around to where I have a area I think it is. Kneeling down and, cutting a plug again I am met with those darn tree roots. Working the root the same way as before to get all of the dirt away from the root so, I can get to what is under it I use my pinpointer to see that it is right under the root about 2 more inches or so. I pop the tip of my knife to the side and, behind the target and start to work the dirt up and out. After a few minutes I see the glint of silver and there is a 1960 rosie smiling at me. ( silver #4 )
Covering up the plug I shut the Etrac down and walk right to the truck for, I am close to being late. ::)
When I get to work I show my wife the silver I have found ( funny thing is my wifes nickname is Silver ) she says cool where did ya get them. After telling her where she says good you can take me their tomorrow for supper. lol Of course to get he brownie points I say sure. lol
This morning as soon as I got up I knew I was headed right back to work the area again this time with even slower sweeps and, from a different direction. My wife laughs when she sees me getting ready so early and says "you going back"? I hang my head a little scuff my feet back and forth and smile and say "yep"as I head out the door.
Getting out of my truck the guy meets me and say "your back again ehhh what did ya find"? Telling him a lot of wheat pennies and some silver coins he just smiles and says have fun.
Now, I get back and start to work a tight pattern and watch the numbers and listen to the tones it is not long before the wheat pennies and clad start to fill my pouch again. Over the next two hours I am lucky enough to work out from under tree roots more wheat pennies and then next to the swings I get another 12/45 high tone that gives up another merc. ( silver #5 )
It is again close to time to start to think about heading to the truck when I make the turn next to a tree I get that high tone 12/45 reading. This time out pops another rosie. ( silver #6 )This sure has been a nice spot that " the other guy has cleaned out " ::) Walking about 5 feet I hit a high tone one way and a reading that bounced around a little. But, in one direction it read 12/45 once so, lets see what it is. Again, it would not give me a solid pinpoint so, I did the waggle to see where I thought it was and, cut the plug. This time there it was at the bottom of the hole on edge another roise. ( silver #7 )
Thinking to myself if someone searched this before I did he must have not wanted to fight with the tree roots or, he really did not listen to watch his machine was telling him.
Walking about another 20 feet there it is again the high pitch sound of silver. Looking down again the meter reads 12/45 but, there is another one that sounds the same only a few inches away. Taking my time I cut the plug and find the 7th silver dime. ( silver #8 ) Now, it's time to pinpoint the other 12/45 reading and the high pitch to pop out my last silver of the day. Another rosie bring my total silver coins in about 5 hours of searching to 9 silver coins.
Quarters;
1963 Washington
Dimes
1964
1960
1954
1951
1946
1945
1942
1941
I did not count all of the wheat pennies ( all of them in the 40's to 50's )or the clad.
It just goes to show that if you are told the place you want to hunt has been "cleaned out" take the time and the right mental attitude to work the site slow and steady. And, pick out the goodies left behind. I know this was a long post I hope I did not bore you too bad. Here is a pic of the silver coins I got in a little over 5 hours.
Thank you for looking I hope you enjoyed it.
