Well I didn't go away with that super-duper spectacular find that we all hope for, but I did leave NOT WANTING TO LEAVE. lol I got a couple firsts, which again weren't AMAZING finds, but the first thing was the 1863 fatty Indian Head. I have found 13 Indian Heads this year, but this was my first OLDEST IH and first fatty. Second first for me was the knapsack hook. A buddy I carpooled with was working this area at the far corner and I walked over that way. He noticed it was me and pulled me aside and showed me his "quarter" of an eagle breast plate. Even though it wasn't complete it was still awesome and him and I worked that area pretty good. Nothing else too big came out of there...I found a couple 3 ringers out of it, 2 button backs, rivet, knapsack hook, camp lead and a flat based sharps.
The final day my buddy Rick Wines dropped me off at headquarters and I started my way in the corn stalks next to the plowed field for a bit. Nothing. I saw a deer running...it jumped the first fence, ran across the road and then tried to hop the next fence into the small field beside the pond. It fell short and took a bad tumble, the fur flew and the deer rolled a bit, got up and took off running. What did I do? I saw this as a sign! I walked over into that tiny forgotten field that I now like to call the NEW field of .69's. I ended up diggin' 30 .69 caliber mini balls, 3 .69 round balls and the smaller bullet(forget the name) on top of the pile of .69's pictured, in this little field. This goes to show that 250 people will never hunt out 2,500 acres. Just imagine all of the tiny little spots that are loaded with goodies that go missed there. Anyway... I also dug some frags out of the field. My guess is they probably had men with canons up on this little hill getting bombarded with .69's. Pretty amazing when ya think about it. I dug some other modern things out of there, like the male dog tag, a female(dog I guess) tag dated 1947, an N&W button, a huge chunk of lead and a heavy brass/copper horse brush I'm assuming.
As the day was winding down, while missing my daughter and wife...it was hard leaving such a beautiful place, where you get to metal detect for 10 hours straight for 3 days!
