Quite a piece there lostlake, what is it? a grooved double ended maul?


Tough decision to make here but I'd have to say this guy. Some call it a hammer, some say it's a horse tether. Maybe not all that unique in form, but it weighs in at just under 15 lbs. It was found near the entrance of a cave in West Virgina.

Btw, nice topic, should see some interesting stuff in here.

Lostlake 88 , your 4/4 axe/pick/maul?? ,.. Form and size , would lend itself well as a nice little “nut-cracker” of a “war-club” ,... nice unique piece for sure !!




Here’s some pic's of the “Whale-rock” , found in Southern California year’s ago by a 5-6 yr. Old [He named it] . I believe the best description of this artifact would be as a uni-groove [1/4 ?] axe bit . I also think it may have came from the Pacific North-west , where the Double-bit “Effigy Slave-Killer” axes are found/from . The Whale-Rock would seem a bit “light-weight” for a good Nut-Crack'n type tool , and maybe is totemic in nature as are the Effigy Slave-Killer Axes are believed to be ?? Anyway , it seem’s to be “unique” ,... as far as Whale-Rocks go !!

It's hard for me to choose just one, so I'll have to say it's a tie between these two pieces. The 3/4 Grooved Axe was found on Dec 17th of last year and the Diorite Chisel was found just a few weeks ago. Definitely my two favorite hardstone finds.

You know, picking a favorite, is about as hard as the hardstone itself!
The little one is way cool, because of its size and the edge still on it. The other is just different, being more squared than round, as most are. More like a wedge.
Nice topic, Lostlake. It has brought out some beauts'.

I'm going to change my post because the bannerstone isn't really hardstone. I was thinking pecked and ground.
This is my favorite true hardstone. It was found in the woods and moss had it attached to the bottom of a big oak tree. I wonder still if the tree pushed it out or if someone else found it and then lost it. It's true color is tan and the dark side is stained from the moss.

PS Nice mace lostlake, and Jon that's an awesome artifact.

Here is my runner up but to be honest I like both about the same. Nice hardstone all around fellas.

I cant really compete with my Northern and western friends but here are a couple. I consider greenstone a hard stone, to find (celt) the other axe is a hardstone.

This one has to be my favorite cause its my only lol. Smallest iv'e seen at 3 1/2" long X 2 1/4" at the widest X 1 1/2" at thickest. It weighs just 9 ounces! Found it in a creek where it meets a river and there was a big camp in the field on the banks of the creek.

I like that one !!

Here is my most unique at the moment. It's a Mississippian Spud from IL. Made from Speckled granite right at 5" long. Not perfect, but authentic, and I was taken to the field it was found in to within 15 feet, and I have all history as well.
