I finally got out to see if the ghost town I found on my maps is really there and it was cellar hole city! Public land to boot so no issues there. It was a real dump (literally) so I headed for a foundation across the stream and far from litter bug road. found flat buttons then a shankless tombac then this beauty (beauty to me anyway). It has a clear date out of the earth but it had a severe concretion on the front my cleaning revealed her head and the fact that there was no patina under the corrosion cauliflower but I am thrilled with her appearance considering. By the way it t was only 1/2 inch deep I was sure it was fake or something at first! She is a 1798 draped bust large cent and I love her ;D

Actually The signal was broken up pretty good there was a big hunk of iron with it that caused the concretion which had rust still in it. The signal was so poor that I passed it over on my first pass then once I had more of the weeds trampled down I ran into it again and decided to dig. I always scrape the leaves away with my foot before I pinpoint and there it was I never even got down to dig I just bent over and picked it up figuring it was modern junk boy was I wrong it is my first 1700s American coin!

You should love her. That is a heck of a coin find Congrats on a great coin save. :notworthy:

Congrats on your first bust coin, she is definitely a looker! I'm really impressed with the way you cleaned that copper and removed the cauliflower. What method did you use?

I used them all started with peroxide then careful short bursts of electrolysis with picking at the concretions in between then about 5 minutes in a brass tumbler to even out the overall look of the cleaning not a method for any coin other than the most hopeless. This is not something I would recommend to anyone interested in collector's value. I think it looks great in my display. Much better than a 1798 coliflower head :laughing9: although much less collectable
