This thing is small. Must be a cuff button? Not sure but think its a civil war Union uniform button? One of the pics shows it on a penny for size.

So, based on the fact the the owners of the homestead that we found this button on had a son who was in the civil war, we are confident that we were able to trace the button to its owner and even found where he is buried and visited his last resting place.
