I went back to the park I've been hunting for about 2wks now... my first time there (which was my first time ever using an md) I found 2 wheat pennies. I've been back there three times since then, the last two I just found a bunch of trash and junk... including 12 rifle shells. Today I started out searching near an old looking stone wall I'd been hunting, I found a clad dime (1980), and the came across a bullet shell from a 22... it was really hard to pinpoint, it kept rolling down the hill I was on and the signal kept vanishing it drove me crazy! About 1hr into it I got a call from my girl telling me to get home and blah blah blah.... I figured I needed to find something good before I left so I headed down a path in the woods and stopped at its end. The path was overgrown with nature and after awhile I lost it, at the very end I hit a strong signal and dug a hole about 5in in depth, I scanned the ground and the signal was gone so I scanned the pile of dirt I had removed and my md rang out loud with a silver signal. The dirt was dark on top and turned kinda orange towards the bottom. I broke up a big clump of dirt and saw...

Re: My first great find... ww09.20.06

Thanks All! This is my first in so many ways and my oldest. After a few days of scraps this has really renewed my MD spirit! I know the coin is not worth a whole lot but I wanted to clean it without devaluing it. Could anyone recommend a good way to do this?

Congrats on the SLQ and it's in nice condition! I don't clean too much other than rinsing it off with water and a soft toothbrush. I do occasionally clean my silver coins found on farm fields with a silver cleaner I bought from a coin dealer. HH, Mike

Beautiful SLQ!!...I have only dug one, and with no date.

I know you're not supposed to clean silver coins, as it devalues them, but first I make sure it's not a key date or something, then if it's not, I break out the Simichrome and a cotton cloth and let er rip. They come out beautifully. There's no abrasives, and after only a few weeks they start to develope a nice natural tone.
Look up Simichrome on the web and buy some!

SLQ!!! I could just look at those kind of quarters for hours. :o :o :o

I want to find one so bad I can taste it! There's one out there for me somewhere, I'll keep it swinging. Super nice find!!

Sounds like i better start checking my paths to a from more closely. I've always just left the coin in distilled water for a while to see if that helps

great find!! I'm still waiting for my first SLQ and quite a few other firsts.
