My First Hunt

Howdy fellas. I've been lurking around the forums for a few weeks and decided to go after some halves for my first hunt. I ordered $500 from my CU and when they came the lady offered me $1000 in halves and $1000 in quarters. I declined the quarters but took on the extra halves. I spent the evening going through them and there was no silver in the first box.


I dug into the second box and realized that 36 of the rolls were what appears to be almost uncirculated gold colored bi-centennial kennedys. I have searched around and it would appear these are nothing special. (I didn't figure they were since I had so many of them). They don't have any stamps on them like some of the others I have seen and the reverse side seems to be a little bit darker shade of gold than the obverse. You guys ever see this? Of the 14 rolls that were normal in there I was able to find a single 40%er so I'm glad I took the extra box. Had I not found any at all I might have been discouraged enough not to go back again. Welcome to the hobby, 1 40% in 2000 is good for me these days.. As for the gold plated ones kinda cool you found a whole box of uncirculated ones, I'd throw em on fee-bay for at least 13% over value + shipping. You never know..

Every bank I have ordered boxes of halves from has had a 2 box ($1000) minimum order. Dunno why.

I have found several gold plated halves over the years (even a silver one or two), but I don't know of anyone who has found that many all at once. Like someone else suggested, if you have the time and desire, you might throw a roll or two on ebay and see what happens. Technically, they are worth 50 cents each, but that doesn't mean that there aren't people out there willing to pay more. I wouldn't be totally shocked if you could get $20 per roll or even a little more for at least some of them.

Ya, It seems like a waste to split them all up and return them to the coin machine seperately, but, If I don't get quick bites on them that'll probably be what happens. I took a roll to the local coin/gold/silver buyer and they threw it in their machine and said infact it is gold plating. He wasn't interested at all though. Not even at face value. When I ordered from the CU they said min order was a $500 box so I took that. Not sure how they ended up ordering double that for me and $1K in quarters!? Oh well, they didn't seem to care either way.
