at least you got out and had fun the finds will come soon enough just gotta keep digging

Like anything else, takes time. Just stay the course and learn your machine. The better finds WILL show.

HH!

Sounds a bit like my first hunt. Learn what some common coins sound like and then focus on that sound. Turn you discrimination up to only let in cents, dimes, and quarters for a while...not pull tabs and nickels and all the other junk. This will speed up the learning process. You'll be there in no time.

thanks for the kids words everyone! i will not give up. i came home and watched a few videos on my detector, and come to find out it i wasnt even using it 100% correct. oh well lesson learned.
till next time!

watch a ton of videos and ask alot of questions theres alot of minelab users on here

Sounds like my first outing, my first target dug was a sardine can (unopened) at about 20". Then cans and caps, but eventually I found 2 clad quarters and felt like a champ. Then the following week I scored a small silver ring and the hobby consumed me. So like everything else it takes time to figure your machine out. Try hitting up your family houses at first ;)

I have been detecting for a while now and I still have days like this. The most exciting element of this hobby is you never know what the next dig is going to produce, but that one great keeper will make you quickly forget about all the pull tabs and rusty nails! Just keep at it and you will make some great finds. Like a lot of wise treasure hunters on this site have said, "you got to get your coil over it to find it" & "dig everything" . I know you will be posting some great "First" I can't wait to see them! :icon_thumleft:

Just a matter of time until you uncover something really great. But you've to hunt as much as possible and read your local history to find good sites. Good luck!

Put some coins out in your yard and go over them...listen to the sounds that come out of the machine over each coin, pulltab, poptop,..etc...keep doing that before you go out each time.....it only takes about 10 min....just so you learn the tones.

When you go detecting....dig every "REPEATABLE" sound...just like you heard when you were in your yard.

And yes....watch Youtube.....you can really learn a lot......the more times you go detecting..the more you will learn

BAAAM!!! i watched a few videos on how to set up my detector the right way... i had a few minutes before it got dark so i ran to my grandmothers home (oldest home in my family) and wouldnt you know it, i found a dime within 2 min.! no it was not silver and was a 2004... but dammit it was a dime!! hahaha
thanks again everyone. im hooked on this hobby even if i havent found anything "cool" yet

WTG! You have the right attitude, you will go far with metal detecting.Keep it up! Read the manual again then again.Learn and enjoy.Read and ask ?.

I have the 705 and pull tons of trash out cant be helped The pull tabs are a killer Good luck with the 505

The longer you use the Xterra the more you will be able to distinguish the sound of junk but you'll never get to the point where you aren't digging some of it. You don't want to set your discrimination too high or you'll miss out on potential gold. But I admit I get lazy sometimes and only dig clad and silver signals (34 and up on the X705).
