I use to board a horse at a stables about 8 miles from where I live (sold him in Jan, looking to buy another). I still go out there time to time when a friend of mine needs me to feed his horse for him. I talked to him a couple of days ago, and he stated that one of the boarders he has come to know lost his ring out there. His friend was able to get a detector and tried to look for it, but to no avail. I asked him to describe it (yellow gold ring with a white cross on it) and where it was lost. His friend said he thought he lost when he was feeding his horse. I asked my buddy where his pen was and said I did not have a lot going on so I would take a run out there and see what I could find. I found his pen easy enough, and he puts his hay on pallets to keep it off the ground, so naturally I started around there. Nothing. I saw where his feeder was, so I seached around the path from the pallets to the feeder. Nothing. I decided to search all along the panels to his pen, again nothing. I did get a few pull tab signals, but that is exactly what they were, pull tabs. I decided it was time to step back and really look the area over, because it was obvious that it was not where he thought he lost it (surprise, surprise
). This is only my second attempt at finding a ring someone said was lost and they asked me to look for it. My first attempt unfortunately ended in failure. I have read many posts of folks finding lost items like this, and one thing that stood out was generally the item was never where the person said they thought they lost it. So I decided it was time to expand my search area. By now I have been out there about 45 min. I decided to start where I ended when I was searching by the pen, and continue working outwards. About 30 minutes later I get a +19 reading on my DFX. Depth meter says on top of the ground. I brush some leaves away, and see nothing. I am expecting it to be on top of the ground, since it was just lost. I decide to get out my vibraprobe, and after a few seconds it starts vibrating big time. I brush some dirt away, and see a very thin circle of gold. Apparently it had fell on its side and he ran over it with his truck, as I found it in a tire track. Since it had rained here a couple of days ago, the ground was still damp, which was lucky for him because if it had been dry, then that ring would be sorely out of shape. At is was it did not get bent at all. I called Mickey and said I found the ring, and I am on my way over to your place. He said he would call his friend and let him know. I got there before he did, but I could tell he was really relieved when he got out of his truck and saw me holding it. He said it was not worth a lot gold wise, but it had a lot of sentimental value to him. I could tell when I found it that it had been worn quite a bit, not really old, just well worn. He asked where I found it, and when I told him he said "OMG, that is why I never found it". When he went back to look for it he also expected it to be on the top of the ground. He offered me $20 for my effort, but I declined as I said I did not have anything else to do, and it got me off my butt. It is almost a shame that I did not find it on my own, as after I cleaned it up and tried it on, it was a perfect fit! It was my first return though, and felt good. I wish I would have taken my camera along, but did not even think about it, my thoughts were on seeing if I could find the ring. Oh, well, if I ever get the chance again, I will have to remember to take the camera. HH all.
