Travelled to Kansas with my buddy Jerr-Man. We detected a spot where an old Victorian era house once stood. About half way through our hunt, I got a nickel signal on the AT Pro. The numbers were low for nickels, but the tone sounded good so I dug it.
About 4-5 inches down out popped this coin. At first I thought it was an old penny, but Jerr told me he thought it was bigger than penny...lol Once we got it cleaned up we could see that it had a Five on the front. I knew it was a nickel and not token because of the United States of America on the front. I thought it might be a V nickel but eventually saw a shield on the back.
I don't know the exact date of this coin, but Shields were minted between 1866-1883, so it's somewhere in there.
Anyway, thanks for looking. The back of the coin is toasted so I didn't post a pic of it...
