Travelled to Kansas with my buddy Jerr-Man. We detected a spot where an old Victorian era house once stood. About half way through our hunt, I got a nickel signal on the AT Pro. The numbers were low for nickels, but the tone sounded good so I dug it.

About 4-5 inches down out popped this coin. At first I thought it was an old penny, but Jerr told me he thought it was bigger than penny...lol Once we got it cleaned up we could see that it had a Five on the front. I knew it was a nickel and not token because of the United States of America on the front. I thought it might be a V nickel but eventually saw a shield on the back.

I don't know the exact date of this coin, but Shields were minted between 1866-1883, so it's somewhere in there.

Anyway, thanks for looking. The back of the coin is toasted so I didn't post a pic of it...

We'll be going back to that spot, as well as some other amazing spots that we have exclusive permission to

Sounds like a good spot.

Love the shield nickel!

Ain't "firsts" sweet! :)

Congrats!

I have yet to find one myself. Grats!

love it, great find

Thank you for sharing your hunt and those pictures with us .

At least you can tell what it is !! Big congrats on that first brother !

Thanks bud! It was my firsts shield, first 1800s coin, first time I have seen nickel come in that low on the at pro... think it was a 48....a little under the usual low 50s for nickels... anyway appreciate all the kind comments

It's always a thrill to find something on your wish list. A shield nickel has eluded me thus far. Congratulations.

Congrats to you on a first! The nickel seems like its in pretty good shape. Often those don't fare too well.

Thanks Coily! The reverse is terrible, you can barely see a shield. Just wish I could get a date off of it so I'd know the exact age.... But... I have a suspicion that the spot where I found it has plenty more goodies to give up. Going back in about two weeks. Glad that the hot summer days are over, it was 100 degrees that day, and felt like 110, so we couldn't hunt as long as we would have liked. :) Appreciate the comment!

Always a great feeling finding something from that time period.

Definitely, I can't wait to find more!

Congrats on your first sheild nickel..

Nice find. Shield nickels don't come out of the ground that often and yours is actually quite nice for a ground find. I've only found 3 in 35 years of detecting.

Thanks, yeah the back is toasted! Glad I could make out what it was though! Can't wait to get back on that spot!
