With my discriminate set at just below nickel I got a solid tone with a bit of a crackle. I flicked the trigger on my Tejon forward to enable the second discriminate set just under screw cap. She still gave a solid signal, but I could hear that bit of iron. I decided to dig. I pulled the plug and out popped this coin. I knew it was foreign as I looked at both faces. After some research, I found out it's a 1925 Austrian 1/2 Schilling. It's my first foreign coin, and my first silver. It makes one wonder how it got to a hillside in Washington State.
Sorry about the pictures, they're the best I can do! HH

WW2 souvenir, perhaps?

Life's a Garden... Dig It.

Congrats on the two firsts. Well done.

Congrats on your firsts! I love foreign coins quite a lot.

Thanks, guys. As far as I know, the previous owner of this property wasn't a veteran. He built the house and lived on the property all the way from the '50s into the late eighties. Although there was a homestead here in the early 1900s, I'm not sure who homesteaded the property. Could have been an Austrian homesteader or logger who dropped the coin. That's what I would like to believe, anyway!

Very cool first silver, old and foreign, double the cool. Just curious was it in the water or dirt?

That is a very cool first silver find. Congrats!

Big congrats on your two firsts. How cool is that with one coin. You will always remember your "first" as I do with mine, it was a 1912 s Barber Dime. In fact I found my first ever Silver coin and first ever Gold (wedding band) on the same day four years or so ago! I wonder how many detectorist can say that? That is part of the fun with this hobby, the stories that will go along with your finds! Good luck and happy hunting!

I wish all the finds would come with a complete story of how it came to rest where I found it, not to be I guess. ;)

Still an excellent find! Nice to find something different.

I wonder though, you guys on the "other side of the pond", if you find a good ole American silver dollar. Would you consider that
finding a "foreign" coin? ;) LOL

Thanks everybody for all the nice comments! I got my first gold about 50 yards from where I found the coin. It was a Gruen wristwatch from around the '40s. I have yet to post it. This little homestead has got a lot of history. And I found the coin in the dirt. Thanks everyone!

I was wondering why it came out of the dirt so dark, but found that it is .640 silver, so that explains the heavy patina. Nice find, the coin has a really nifty design. Also, post-up that watch!

WTG on the first!! nice find

Alright, I posted the watch up in Today's Finds. The thread is titled "Gold on the Homestead". Again, thanks everyone!

congrats on your firsts.

Thanks!
