Slowly but surely I'm gathering more and more information about the house I just purchased. I'm doing it through questioning my neighbors, going on line, and by swinging the coil. I'm documenting my finds and I'm trying to connect the finds to the previous occupants.
So far I know that the people I bought it from, were in this house for 10 years. The only thing they left behind were bottle caps and pull tabs. Lol.
The lady they bought the house from was a life long companion of the previous owners. Her name was EJ. The previous owners, Buddy H and his wife, Dorothy, were married in 1945 and purchased this house in 1946. They celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1995. Dorothy passed in 1996. Buddy H went into a nursing home in 2000 and passed away in 2004. Buddy and Dorothy had 2 children. I have recovered evidence that the children played in the backyard. Last night I recovered a small boy's "Buster Brown" ring and a girl's "Cinderella" ring. Another toy that brought back memories was a little cap loaded bomb that had fins. You would screw apart the tip, place a cap in it, and then toss it in the air.
Buddy was a golfer and on previous hunts I recovered a golf club donut and clete cleaner.
He was also considered a wealthy merchant since he was the owner of 2 local Five and Dimes.
I will probably have to go to the McKean County Historical Society for information on who the occupants were from 1900 until 1945. I have recovered musket balls and a French Napolean III, 5 centimes bronze coin, circa 1850's. Last night I recovered a 1922 McKean County, PA dog tag.
The history of this property may very well turn into an article worthy of being printed in a Treasure Magazine.

Very interesting trying to unfold the story of your homestead. I hope you continue to share as you go. Very interesting!

It's so intriguing to put the pieces back together one recovery at a time. Date the item and locate the most likely owner who lost it. How cool is that? Enjoy your new digs and thanks for sharing the puzzle pieces as you begin locking them all into place. Should be a great time on some older and more historic eastern dirt. Hopefully some WOO HOO moments as well.:icon_thumleft:

It'll be a real adventure learning about the original owners, and then trying to find something you can trace back to them. Good luck on your journey!

Nice cracker jack ring I found two of them in my park.....:icon_thumleft:

I'm glad to hear your settling in well. Digging the history of the place is a sure sign that you belong. Congrats!!!!

Great research and nice finds. I remember those paper cap bombs. After a little while we'd get borde and just take a rock and fire off the entire roll of caps. I guess paper caps are no longer PC. Little boys should play with things less threatening. Glad I'm on the 17th hole of my life!

Its very interesting to discover the history of your land. Someone tracing their genealogy may come knocking on you're door someday. Then you will be able to help them with their history. You may find maps of your property on the library of Congress website. Also, the bureau of land management may have the original sale of your land. Thanks for sharing. I'm looking forward to your discoveries.:weee:

Great stuff, ATW...So do you miss the hustle/bustle of big city life? Thx for sharing, Ddf.

Neat finds! Looks like you have a good dig into the history of your "new" home and it will be interesting to find out what else you turn up! Good luck and keep us posted!:icon_thumright:

Welcome to Pa

The first properties I looked at were in Potter County.
Port Allegheny is on Rt 6, just over the Potter County line. I have the best of both worlds.
Kinzua Bridge is only a skip and a hop from me. I'll get there eventually. Right now, I'm waiting on the delivery of my birth certificate with a raised stamp. That way I can switch over my NY State license, purchase a 4 wheel drive, and get PA plates. Then the rest of Pennsylvania is mine to pillage.

Yep, sounds like a book is in there somewhere. :)

Nice combo of settling in and "unsettling" in. Have fun.
