Yep, singular terms. :icon_pirat:

I got the Ike during cherry picking and the ASE tonight via ebay.com

Question: how do I get the ASE case to close down completely without losing the black foam inside the case?

If I remove the inner black foam and just leave the outer black foam the coin would fumble around as the cut is not precise to match the ASE size.

nice find. the case might not be the right one. all the ones I buy that are similar to yours fits perfect with no crushing of the foam or ring. looks like you need the next size up.

No, the cases are the same, the foam comes 38MM and 40MM. 38MM are for Morgans, 40MM are for ASE.

Yep, by the looks of it, it looks like someone tried to put an eagle into an air-tight that was designed for a silver dollar. Just get a new foam insert.

Can someone point to the the direction of just getting a foam insert?

ASE's are a different size than the "silver dollar" size. They require their own airtite. Same thing goes for Maple leafs.
