Oh but to be on an endless vacation.... would that I could! Alas, vacations, like all good things, have to come to an end eventually. Today was the day. Well.. technically, I'm still on vacation till I return to work Tuesday morning, the day after Memorial Day. But the Beach Vacation that my wife and I enjoyed so much this week is officially over. We've made that long long long long long long long long (are we home yet?) long long long long drive home from the beach. No metal detecting today. *sigh* I could but gaze longingly down at the beach this morning as I put my detector back in my travel bag and finished packing up for the return trip. And wouldn't you know it! The weather was going to be PERFECT at the beach today. <shaking head sadly> Oh well, at least the weather was good the entire trip home and still gorgeous here in Kentucky when we *DID* get home. Perhaps I can get out and play a little bit with my detector back on home ground tomorrow or the next day.
Be that as it may be, I've left some of you hanging as to my adventures on the beach the past few days. I shared my finds from the first day and even the second day of my vacation detecting.. but have not kept up with days three and four.. yet.
I can remedy this quite easily, now that I'm home and aside from my cat who's perched between me and my computer keyboard..for want of attention she's not had all week.. yeah.. she's demanding now! Anyway.. (flinching at feline tail brushes face).. Days Three and Four at the beach were pretty busy. Not so much with metal detecting, though I *did* manage to get in some swing time of course, but rather with the dreaded shopping and sight seeing. Oh, and more Miniature Golf. <smile>
I got out Wednesday for about a half hour in the morning, then again later in the evening after dinner. The second trip out I ran into no less than FOUR other metal detectorists. The first guy was going the opposite direction and was down in the surf.. he never looked up. The next two guys were both on the dry sand as I was, but neither were very encouraging. In their own way, both pretty much told me not to bother with this stretch of beach, that it was "Played out".. <one raised eyebrow> Okayyyyyy.. if that was so, then why were *THEY* detecting this beach? But of course.. trying to discourage anyone else so that they might have it all to themselves. <shrug> I went on to find a nice handful of coins after talking to them. (they weren't together mind you, just similar advice.) About a half a mile further down the beach I met yet another fellow coming from the other direction. Actually he was chatting with another gentleman and talking about his detector. He let the older fellow hear with his headphones and was demonstrating finding a target. Turns out the guy giving instructions was a beginner. The older gentleman was a retired pastor and a local there in North Myrtle Beach. We talked about detectors and detectorists, the weather and the "Biker Week" rally that was kicking off this weekend. The Beginner detectorist wasn't a local, but he does live in South Carolina, just not near Myrtle Beach. He was very interested in my Bullseye PinPointer. I told him to put out the money and buy one.. He would never leave home without it again after having used it. <grin> Especially in SAND! I told them about the last two guys I'd seen and spoken with.. and their advice about detecting this beach.. then showed him the handfull of coins and stuff I'd found in the half hour or less since speaking with them. So he didn't give up detecting for the day.
On our way back up the beach towards our hotel, my wife and I were approached by a lady and her husband. The lady had lost a ring sometime earlier that day in the sand in front of their hotel (here on the beach) and asked me if I'd found it. I had to reply no of course, but that I would be willing to look for it if she wanted. I also told her of the other three guys I'd seen detecting this stretch earlier.. the last guy hadn't made it this far, and was now going in the other direction. I asked her if she had gone swimming in the ocean. She had.. and had had the ring on then. She was also not sure as to when the ring came off, only when she had noticed it missing.
Well nothing turned up in my search, and the lady wasn't terribly certain as to just exactly where they had been "set up" earlier on the beach, everyone else was gone and she had nothing to go by. I told her that chances were she'd probably lost the ring in the surf while swimming. How the cold water makes the fingers shrink and rings and other jewelry seems to just fall off. I wish I had a water proof or "wet" detector, but since I don't I couldn't search there for her. *sigh*
That is as about as close as I've gotten to finding gold on the beach. Guess it wasn't meant to be, this trip. Still though, for a "played out" beach I still did pretty well..

$2.10 in coins, a new set of wheels! lots of can bling (pull tabs) and a couple of new acquaintances. Not to mention all the salt air, exercise (walking is sand is a killer!) and the pleasure and enjoyment of my wife's company to be sure!
Day 4 was to be understated, for sure! It was sunny out in the morning, but a bit cool. Still though, the beach was pretty busy due to the sunshine.. something that had been missing for almost two weeks locally. Due to other plans however, detecting was confined to one quick hunt near the hotel we were staying in.. and by quick, I mean maybe an hour if that. We had other important and pressing issues to attend to. Like. Lunch. and Shopping! and More Miniature Golf! I'm sad to say that the last detector outing at the beach was subdued to say the least.. lots of pull tabs, bottle caps, a half of a pair of tweezers, and all of $0.34 in coins. WooHoo! I'm rich! <grin> I told my wife, between the first few days finds and today's (yesterday now) I could afford to buy us a couple of sodas for the return trip home. <grin>

Oh well.. it WAS vacation.. and metal detecting was just part of the pastime and liesure while on vacation.. not the purpose FOR the vacation. I mean, you have to stop and smell the roses along the way, right?

.... ok, so it's not roses.. but they are flowers.. of some sort. We spotted this plant (dozens of them) at the last miniature golf course we played Thursday afternoon. I'm not sure what kind of flower or plant it is, but the leaves remind me of mint. It didn't smell like any mint I've ever been around though. <shrug> Anyone out there a botanist?
Now that we are home, and I've had some time to go through some of the pictures we took on our vacation, and edit a few of them, I can share some of the other sights from this trip. Starting with a View from the driver's seat of our car as we entered the Great Smokey Mountains near Gatlinburg Tennessee (I-40 East)...

...Pretty cool considering the picture was taking from the front seat of the car, through the windshield, while the car was moving at highway speeds. <grin> Note the time the picture was taken was a little past 11:30 AM Monday Morning.
Here's a picture of our hotel.. with our room pointed out.. top floor.. birdseye view!

Looking out off our balcony at the room, the beach (to the south) looked pretty deserted Monday evening.. of course it had been raining that day, and for days leading up to it. Note the one Lone diehard metal detectorist out on the beach even then!

Well the weather did improve throughout the week, This morning it was bright and sunny... *sigh* as you can see...

... Alas... The beach will be there for another trip, sometime.. hopefully this year!..<smile> In the meantime, I'll settle for my own backyard and dreaming of returning to the sands and finding fortune and that gold ring or two.. <grin> Yeah Right! And I'll wake up in the morning and it will have all been a dream. Speaking of waking up in the morning, I need to get my sorry butt to bed. It's been a long long long long long long long day.. and I've got obligations to attend to in the morning. Something about a fundraiser walk that my wife has registered us both for.. *groan* Oh my legs are going to kill me! SAND! Well I hope you all get a vacation soon, and that you all have a good time no matter where you go or what you do.. and if you per chance get to get out and do some detecting.. well..
