Finally I had a good day of metal detecting in the mountains! Lots of research time and long days hiking around with my new AT Pro and I found a spot that produced!

I was hunting for around 5 hours today, got many coins that were a first for me. Also got 2 big bullets, they look old but I'm not sure. The square deal is a token that says "Good for 10 cents on purchase price of Colgates or Palmolive shave cream" I didn't realize the barber was a pretty rare mintage until I googled it, only 800,000 that year with the S. I'm going to get it cleaned and graded. Should I just go to a coin shop for that?

Oh and I love my new AT Pro! I had a Coinmaster pro for almost 2 years and I just upgraded. The 5x8 coil is awesome in the trash, and being able to ground balance for the mineralized soil is so nice. The numerical id numbers help a ton, being able to pick out nickels amongst the pull tabs is pretty easy, but the ones without the tails ring up dang close to a nickel.

Can't wait to get back out there!

This is also my first post and I hope I posted it right

Finds for today were

1904-S barber dime
1920 merc (my first one)
1918 buffalo nickel (also my first)
1943-S silver nickel (another first!)
1945-S silver nickel
4 wheats, oldest 1917-D

Clad - 15 coppers lincs, 2 quarters, 1 dime

Nice find. I'd call that a key date.

Many grading services won't touch a cleaned coin, so have a coin shop take a look before you do anything.

Very nice day you had there ! My 2013 Redbook of U.S. coins has your 1904-S at $45.00 in G-4 - not trying to be a buzz kill but
you shouldn't pay to have it either cleaned or graded . It is key or semi key for sure - I'm just saying it might cost you more than
it's worth to certify it .

(Oh yeah , Welcome to T-net !)

Wow that is an absolute crapload of trash! You must be sore! Sweet finds. That's a lot of firsts in one day. You are one happy dude with that new machine!

Thanks for the heads up! I was unaware of the costs of cleaning and grading. I just wanted to get an accurate appraisal of it because I know they can be worth a decent amount, but 45 bucks for a dime ain't bad!

Dug a lot of trash but the digging was easy, most coins were shallow. The barber and merc were only about an inch down so they rang up nice and clear.

Congrats on all the great stuff, especially the sweet Barber dime!

Looks like you have a killer spot to hunt, congrats on the firsts!

The grading companies would grade and "slab" any coin you want, cleaned or not. Cleaning a coin just could adversely effect the grade. You can on your own go to the NGC website and for different prices get whatever membership you want for whatever service you want from them.

Here is a link, there are very affordable services to get a coin graded, and they are very reputable.

That is a great haul for any day, even without a key date. I wouldn't bother with getting it slabbed. Its not really worth the investment. If you're by a coin store, get a selection of 2x2's or a package of flips. Flips are more expensive, but worth it for your keepers. Flips generally come in 2x2's, but crown flips are available also (They are great for many other small items as well as coins). There really isn't much to clean there either. It looks like what a Barber dime in that grade should look like. Might be nice to get the remaining soil cleaned off the back, but its otherwise about as nice as its going to get. Maybe the Civil War guys can ring in on the bullets but they look to be Minie balls from that era.

Barbers will always make your heart speedup:thumbsup: Tony

Looks like you weren't shy to dig those signals for tabs...it's gonna pay off with gold some day... ;)

Outstanding digs there.

Nice finds. I like the Barbers. Way to go.
