Although I have found a couple of childrens toys made of lead, 99% of my found toys were made from an amalgamation of tin and lead. Because lead toys were pretty thick, people back in the 17th century started adding lead to tin, they could then make finer and thinner toys. Most of the tin toys that I have found were made from tin/lead, and a few from the amalgamation from tin and silver. The draw back was that tin is vulnerable to metal pest than lead. I have been lucky to have found quite a few toy objects in the past, the places to find them are harder to search because here the Archo are first nowadays on the building sites.

Most of my Tin ones are from the 17th century, however there are a few from the 16th and a couple from the 15th (1480). If you have any idea about the ages of lead toys please let us know.

Very nice woody, are they river finds. They all look as if they have come from silt due to their colour and good state of preservation.
HH Robert.
Hi Robfinds. No, not river finds. They are finds in the ground in organic layers, layers made long ago with trash and organic material. Long ago here in Holland could mean from the 17th back to the 10th/12th centuries. The water level very shallow here in this part of Holland so anything deep in the ground (deep = 1-3 meters) stays in the water, and the water is oxygen free due to the old organic material, so if not disturbed, and being so deep its not, the objects stay good.

The land sinks here because of the subsurface, there is no real stone (or its real deep) just layers of hard sand and above them a lot of peat layers.

Of course when such an object is taken out of that layer into the open air it reacts quickly, so you have to protect it at once. These black layers have many finds in them, also ceramic finds. If someone broke a vase or plate back then, there was I guess not good waterproof glue, so they just threw them into the trash heap or hole. So those layers are what we try to find here, but it involves a lot of digging, just like searching on the Thames does...

Thanks Cru, it took like I mentioned years playing in the dirty smelly mud to get them. I have more but they are of a lesser quality. Tin objects have to remain deep in the ground and sealed under or in a good thick clay layer to exist at all here. It is unusual for sure to find them, you have to be deep, most of mine were found when the constructors were digging deep for a underground parking lot (under the building). Lately those sites are off limits, there had been too much stealing here around the building sites so they closed them down pretty good, fenced in. I guess the only good place in England to find them could be the Thames, but then also deep, although I have found 2 on fields in England, not in great condition...

Hi Shaun, the first item I don't really know, have not looked into it, because its just a fragment. Some sort of toy, a standing animal maybe. For all the others look at the file name (just under the photo)

Well most all the horses that I have found until now (besides a roman one) have been thin, so this is a thick one! Say, Shaun, tell me, how DOES that feel, always wondered....

Congratulations on Your Superb Collection of Toys!
My favorites are the Dice, and platters & tea set items, ( too many to list)

It's Difficult for me to identify different metals, (I DO know what Gold looks like!)
I also dig through a lot of mud & find all the pieces of trash people disposed of.
I have also noticed the higher quality of deep finds that are in the oxygen free layers.
I often find ash layers to get through with melted glass & metals.
Thanks for posting these, I now have identification on several 'Heads or tails' tokens
that were unknown to me before. was there a specific time period when these were popular?
Again, great post & thanks for showing! HH to all!
