Hey Guys,

Some of you might have read some of my "I'm new" to the hobby introductions in The General Discussion section... So I got my new F2 out and went into the front yard today. I found a zinc penny close to the driveway of which one of my family members must have dropped because it was dated 2001 and was about 3.5" down. Anyway thats all for now but the frustrating thing was I was getting some target hits but they seemed to be over a relatively wide area.. (probably 2-3 feet so I never could find them and I stopped demolishing my yard trying to. The first time out was indeed fun hearing the pinpointer go off as it hit the penny I dug! The rest was a little frustrating but I'll get over it and I'm going back out in a bit.

You may want to plant a few widely different metal items in your yard - far enough away from each other so they don't interfere with
each other . Plant them at different depths - a few suggestions : a copper cent (pre 1982) a zinc cent (post 82) a nickel , a pull tab,
dime , quarter , nail , silver ring , gold ring - That should do for starters - Should help you get more confident with your machine !

Awesome! On the other hits it sounds like you may have been encountering falsing. Turn down your sensitivity till the machine is stable and make sure you know how to pinpoint. A handheld pinpointer like a Garrett ProPointer will help out a lot! Good luck! :icon_thumleft:

Would mounting the 4" sniper coil be more beneficial to me as I am starting out? This would make it easier for me to find those targets while I am getting used to pinpointing and digging at the target location?

The smaller coil will most likely show targets as being deeper than they are (at least it does on the Explorer), but pinpointing should be a bit easier. Sounds like a plan. Dig only repeatible solid signals for a while to get the feel of good targets. You can crank the discrimination up too to just let coins (minus nickels in) register on the machine for a while till you get a better feel for it.

The first of many pennies to come... But it is the start of a great hobby and you will find some very cool stuff as you stay with it!!!

Congrats, practice makes perfect. Before you know it, Wheat's, Indians and silvers

Congratulations on your first time out and Welcome to TNet! I would save it even if it is a 2001 because your first coin will always be special. :hello:

Now you need to demolish all your neighbors yards!
Hey, it just as easily been an Indian Head Cent, similar readings on the Whites detectors.
You'll get the hang of your machine, just practice, and dig, practice, and dig.
Carl

Many great suggestions above , put in the time & you will find & nothing beats experience.

Thanks guys! It was a lot of fun and when I went back out I found a lot more stuff out in the woods around our campfire area which not terribly surprisingly was all trash. I found 6 shards of aluminum siding which is from the house construction most likely, an aluminum can, some copper wire, a spent shotgun round, and one more harshly corroded penny of which I can make out the monument barely and has no obverse side anymore. So there you have it, my total first dig was about 12 targets or so and it yielded my first two coins. I recycled the rest!

One frustrating thing is the holes I dig, I need them to be a little "prettier" to say the least. I usually have to widen out the hole a bit. This is mainly because a lot of my targets are like two search coil lenghts long so I pinpoint (non-movement) with the F2 and it is a bit difficult narrowing it down. I do the X method and its about 2 coils wide which makes for a bigger hole than my little digger can do in an orderly manner.

Time and practice will pay off with the cool finds.. Nice to see your first find.. Conrats and lots of future success..

.....and the sickness begins.... :)

Thanks for all the tips and encouragement so far guys I really appreciate it and feel like I'm becoming part of the huge community on T-Net. Here are the two notable finds for today which was only a short trip to a school yard where I dug 11 targets in a 50 yard sweep probably... It was slow going as some targets took me awhile to find and a few I didn't find (I gave up after 10-15 minutes due to thinking it may be falsing).. I am still digging the TABS and even some Foil targets but discriminating IRON mainly. What do you think and CHEERS
