Myrtle Beach for a first timer

Does anyone have any info regarding the do's and don'ts of md'ng on Myrtle Beach? I'm planning a trip with the family around mid June and I have the all important kitchen pass to bring my detector with me. I have an Excal 1000 that will allow me to get in the water so any tips for this general area would be appreciated.

I go to Myrtle Beach about 4 times a year. I metal detected in the past and decided to try out the beach. I bought a Bounty Hunter MD and it works great. I tried the beach from the state park pier up to the hotels and found:
bottle caps, eyeglasses, pop tops, small pieces of fine wire, foil, unknown pieces of soft gray metal...etc
Just so my efforts weren't a complete loss I decided to pick up trash as I went. I save everything I find and pick up all the cigarette butts and fireworks and anything else that's trash as I go. I usually end up with a respectable amount of trash.
The only thing I've found so far wasn't with the MD. I found a .50 caliber bullet at the water's edge that was embedded in some kind of amalgam of metal and seashells. The amalgam makes a perfect stand for the bullet. I imagine it came from some kind of warship explosion that fused the bullet into the materials around it. I'll be going back to the beach in a couple of weeks.
I've metal detected right past the park rangers and no one has ever said anything to me except to say hello so I don't believe you have to have a permit or anything. I searched several SC sites and could not find anything about any MD restrictions on the beach.

You should do well depending on the tides an amount of people using the area. Most hunters arrive near sun up, but nobody gets it all. You will need a good long handled scoop for any water retreiving.

Other advice for detecting in June is to wear mirrored sunglasses for watching the babes and not having your eyes pop out.

Hello, i went to myrtal beach last year and bagged myself an awsome 10K wedding band. My advice, hunt the wet sand. If you get there late in the day, you could move up beach...there will be some finds, but nothing real good.

Also, keep an eye out for a river that cuts the beach in half at low tide...lots of people looking for seashells and stuff....fould be profitable

Also, don't limit yourself to metal detetcing...look for shark teeth....I have founf ones big as an inch just looking at the ground!

I have been to MB several times this year. Other than the monetary small change found nothing but pop tabs and beer caps. Looks like they brought alot of new sand into the strand. It was as clean as a newborns bottom. didn't even find much junk there. So I would wait til after a holiday for that area.

The Cherry Grove area was not profitable either. The beaches in that area are covered pretty much. We saw at least 5 MD'rs both days. thats alot of competition.. I am surprised you got to hunt the Park Humpty I may try it next trip.

Just returned from Myrtle beach, March 23 2007.

Actually, just south of there.

Spent two weeks in rented beach house. Was still off-season so rates were incredible.

Recently purchased my first detector and it works well.

I'd suggest just trying your luck up and down but bring a heavy duty digger of some kind. That wet packed sand is not easily scoopable. Also, don't go barefoot. Found a 3 inch fish hook, rusty. Was attached to a lead sinker just under the surface of the sand. The way I figure it, saved someone a tetanus injection because sooner or later that would have gone into someone's foot.


No, didn't find the lost pirate treasure everyone dreams of but some decent stuff.

Lovely little shells all over the place but never did find any shark's teeth.

If you do happen to find the good stuff and want to take the family to dinner try Drunken Jack's. Food is fantastic but holy moley the prices...you're gonna need to find some lost treasure. Not kidding. Have never seen prices that high.

Thanks for the tips, sounds like I need to start eating beans & weenies to save up for the food bill that's waiting for me. I hope that by the time I get there in mid-June there will be a fresh deposit of jewelry of any kind. There's nothing more boring than spending 2 hrs swinging and not even picking up a bottle cap.

Just back from 2 days on the beach. Some areas the sand looks down 10 inches or so and looks much different from last year. Good tides but couldn't find a cut. Most recent drops with a few older losses of clad. One silver earring. One sunglasses. One regular glasses. Lots of pulltabs and nickels but no gold. My best areas were near the 14th avenue pier. A friend did well down where Ocean and 17 split in front of a big hotel / condo. All of us did worse than usual. Storms v. cold weather?

I stopped at a couple schools on the way home and the XLT found 3 silver rings.

Nice weather, clean Ocean air, lots of exercise.

I will be at barefoot yacht club from the 6th to the 13th of May,(won week time share from work) I'll et ya know how i do, if anyone else will be down there during that time give me a reply maybe we can hunt together one morning.

Ok, Maggie, I was at MB near Ocean Blvd and Main all of last week....near OD Pavilion....found about $3 in change, a pair of sunglasses, a fishing sinker, and some "what the heck is this?". But I didn't see you.....hey, I would have loved to have seen a female MDer out there. All I saw were guys....LOL............and tons of shaggers. I was told that after Biker Week, there should be tons of stuff on the beach....hmmmm Too bad I won't be there. I'm in Hilton Head this week...not much luck.....and then back to the Wash DC area....yuk.
Again, wished I could have run into you. It was my first time MDng at MB and would have loved to have had some good tips. Oh well....

Headed to myrtle for a few days the end of this month. Last year found a few goodies but the competition down there is fierce. saw a lot of detectors working the beach.
