Mysterious brick

7 1/2 inches long - 3 inches wide - 1 1/2 inches thick . It's not made out of clay ,rock . or pottery , something lighter . It has the letters ' KAAS' on the top . It almost looks like a chunk of 'Hash' at least it has the same color . It weighs almost 2 pounds . Found it in the barn . Any ideas ?

That brick looks like some really old peete. They get hard when they're old.

I think this is a weight for a cheese press.

Curd is placed into a mold lined with cheese cloth. A press follower is placed on top and weight is placed on to of the follower to squeeze the whey out of the curd. The amount of weight (and time of pressing) will depend on the type of cheese being made. A two pound weight would be used to press "semi-soft" cheese.

Here's part of a recipe for goat cheese I found on the Net:

One hour after setting, the curd is dipped with a large spoon into a regular brick cheese mold obtained from any dairy-supply house. After draining for 1 hour, a follower is placed on the cheese with a two pound weight upon it

Only problem is Matt, if it were a press for making cheese, then the lettering would be an isometric(mirror) image so that it would read correctly on the brick of cheese.

And for Monte, I think that the score marks on the side were caused by a peete digging tool. I see peete being dug in bricks and dried out all the time. Sometimes it gets compresed into bricks and there's a logo or marking on it. We still burn it in our fireplace, I love the smell.

Sorry, I had another look, its too small to be a peete brick, so I have o flippin idea what it really is. Some sort of hand tool for working, maybee softening, leather or rough cloth???

No, it wouldn't touch the cheese. It is simply the weight that applies the pressure needed to squeeze out the whey from the curd - like the dark objects on top of the cheese press diagram (modern) shown below.

Mojjax forgive me if you have already said this but...What is the consistancy of what you ingested "tasted"....Does it seem to be a "Waxy" outer layer?

I shaved of a protruding nub on the side with a razorblade and I kind of licked it to see if it was salty {check out the salt-lick theory from muscelcar } No waxyness either .

Mojjax the sides of this thing look like a jig/scroll type saw cut it from something bigger or it was one of many cut out of a huge sheet.... ??? ??? yOU KNOW WHEN YOU USE A SCROLL/BANDSAW AND YOU TURN A CORNER WITH IT TO CUT you get the marks like this (in red)??? ???

Well mojjax did it taste like s**t? Just trying to narrow it down. Perhaps it is time to cut it open with a hacksaw or knife and see the interior. It's apparently not a valuable artifact. See any seeds in there? HA HA then perhaps we would go back to a previous theory.

The only thing I have learned from this thread so far is WHO to call if you want to have a good party(Just kidding)

Ok, I have some info for you on KAAS. The First record of the Kaas family in the U.S. was in 1852. The 1880 census showed 107 Kaas familys. In different states. Ny,Pa,Oh,In,Wi, Mn,Ne,Mi, and Wiskonsin. Wisconsin Had the highest number of kaas familys with 32 Kaas familys in that state. Then the 1920 census show 82 Kaas familys in the U.S. They were spread out more then. They were also in Il,Ia,Sd,Nd,Mt,Ne,Ks,Tx,Ca,Or, and Maine.
Kaas 1. Dutch and North Germani Metonymic occupational name for a maker or seller of CHEESE!!!!!!!!!!!

LOL I'm not saying that that is a brick of cheese. Perhaps a weight for a cheese press. When cheese is pressed into a mold a weight is applied. Mabe that's what it is. I'm still strying to figure that one out. These things take time. This one is Really Really bugging me!!!!!!
