Mystery Button

[No gold in NY]

I found this button in a prime Revolutionary War area not too far from the Battle of Saratoga. However, my online search indicated it was a Civil War button. Anyone familiar with this design? Your help would be appreciated. Thanks

Nice button! I am not an expert, but I think it was a 2 piece but the back is missing ? I think that would date it mid 1800's on..

post CW - I got a few that look identical to yours
pre WW I
this pic is just a sample of finds from a WW I training camp
finds are from late 1800s early 1900s

Your button is called a general service button. They were made from 1854 to 1902. It was a two piece button. Since there is no back on the button an exact year can not be determined. There were two types of these made. One from 1854 to 1875, and type two, from 1875 to 1902. I can't tell from your pic which type yours is. Here is the difference. Type one has a larger shield, and has 5 bars in it. Type two has smaller and higher shield, with 4 bars on it. Hope this helps to date and type yours.
