I went out to NC over the last 3 days for a natural hunt event called DigStock, which sucked. So, I went door knocking and got some private permissions. I'm happy overall with a Barber quarter, IHP, a really cool key, and a few buttons. I also dug a copper item that looks like it may be a coin but not sure. It's pretty smooth and I'm not seeing any markings but maybe someone here could help identify it? It measures about 1mm thick and Ø 22.15 mm - 23.96 mm depending on where it is measured.

That is a very ornate key. Great finds!

Until the 'coin' is ID-ed, I can't see some more cleaning--then reposting the pic-- will hurt.
Don..
Not sure I understand. I think you are suggesting I clean the coin more and repost? I'm worried about wiping the surface (I had a LC that I could see the portrait until I cleaned with water and a brush). How should I clean?

A great bunch of finds !
I'd try cleaning the coin with Extra Fine Steel Wool or Andre's Pencils.

The copper disc looks like it was flattened with a hammer. It could be a coin. May never be able to tell. But cleaning it would not hurt and might reveal something.

That key is awesome!

Personally, I think that is beyond cleaning what ever it maybe. I suspect not coin.

Thanks for SHARING WITH US !!!!

Nice finds I was thinking a train track penny also

I think you are right - too gone to get any detail off it. And I too question if it is even a coin.

Thanks! The issue with digstock is that I don't think the areas chosen were good enough to support the event. I've been to natural hunts before, and I understand there are no guarantees on finding something, but my brother and I detected the first day from 7am to 6 pm straight with a 30 min lunch and, aside from can slaw and trash, only found a single wheat cent and another unidentified item, possible a coin fragment. But, OK, maybe were just unlucky, however, aside from 20+hours of detecting my brother and I did, I asked around and pretty much everyone I spoke to had the same results. One person, out of at least 20 others that I spoke with had 1 find - a very nice pistareen, but that was it!

Yeah that key caught my eye also. As far as I can guess the mystery coin was a penny that was put on a train track.
