PIKE COUNTY:? Do you want a different kind of CIVIL WAR site to search ? Not far From Stroudsburg just South West of Edgemere on the road from Dingman's Ferry to Porters Lake, in 3500 acres of wilderness, Lies the remains of a cluster of Settlements, quickly constructed By Civil War Draft Evaders and Deserters from both the North & South armies. <> Set on avoiding the war, hundreds swarmed to this area to hide until the wars end. they built what may be the only colony of Civil War draft evaders. <> When they heard the war was over, they quickly moved on. <> Buildings were left in tact, most took only what they could carry, leaving everything else behind. Many of the foundations may still be visible, alot? were in 1976, all it takes is some searching<>? Many of the inhabitants were well off, expecting to stay indefinately, they brought most of their belongings with them.<> Gold & Silver were said to have been cached all over the colony. & most probably remain, due to the Harsh Winters and steamy Summers, taking their toll & many dieing with their caches going unfound. any of the old foundations would be worth the look. <> The best way to find start at Stroudsburg or Edgemere & ask oldtimers or the Historical Society. <><> Some more research on this site can be found in : the HISTORY OF MONROE COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA 1725 to 1976.? <><> GOOD LUCK, 2 hour drive for me. Too far unless I were to make it a several day trip. NOT UP FOR IT AT THIS TIME THO'

Re: N.E. PA Lead

Jeff interesting story....i dont really treasure hunt at this time but i stumbled on this site and have been enjoying it a lot. The reason this interests me is I live not far from there in fact i drive near dingmans ferry every day and the porter lake exit off of 84 when i go to work.. i have to beleive that a lot of that area is private land though....not for sure...but it is got me to thinking a bit about....would just be neat to see an area like that regardless of what it holds...
