Any of you coastal NC folks out there? Can you MD on Nags Head in front of hotels?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think anywhere south of Oregon Inlet is off limits.

so you should be safe in Nags Head

metal detected there once, got yelled at and I had to leave...wasn't finding anything anyhow

To far North for me Mack,
Never been up that way(detecting that Is).But I know anything you see shaded on this map is a no-no.National Sea Shore.

Some guy that didn't like you getting the gold rings before he had a chance to go over the area.

Thanks Saabman. I think that info is very specific and useful. Leaves no doubts.

ah I'd be wary of that link, it seems like someones homemade webpage and who knows where they got their information. I'd look for something more official.

Unless of course that is your site Saabman and you did the research, then it would leave no doubt.

Nope not my site. I found it when I was thinking of heading over that way to do some hunting. But I did compare it with another site I found and they were the same. Just thought it would be useful.

No harm in double checking it though....

i stay at nags head every year and hunt you just cant go past the inlet. willy

anything north of the national seashore!

While on vacat in Manteo, I was pulled over. The Officer checked our car and asked why I had my MD, told him I planed on searching after we got a Hotel. He said that the Entire OBX was considered a National Protected Seashore and that Detecting was Illegal??? the guy at the Hotel said the samething. ???

The officer in Manteo had no clue nor did the guy in the hotel. You can detect in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk. Jockey's ridge is off limits though. Just stay north of the National Seashore which starts just north of Coquina Beach on the ocean side of the beach road below South Nags Head. The National Seashore starts well before Oregon Inlet.

Be sure to enlarge the map.

Unless the laws changed in the last year or so any area from the slightly above Oregon Inlet to include all the beaches north of that are open.

Eathads is spot on...the officer and hotel worker were wrong. Not to beat a dead horse but from Nags Head north you are good to go and there are tons of shipwrecks and lots of newly lost items. Modern clad/jewelery to 300+ year old coins.

Good luck

Thank you all for the advice and information. I'll post on TNet when I get back with my pockets full.
