Not a contest , i genuinely dont know who this represents or which country.European i would lean towards soley on the cross showing on the obverse.
The designs inside the quarters of the cross are the equivilent of our date and mintmark i suspect as is seen on British hammered coinage. This one has been heavily clipped as was the practice and commenly seen.I know the reverse is telling us something , what i dont know.
The obverse shows the crowned figure , A King almost certainly , perhaps a Prince , who i cant say.

Any thoughts and opinions are gratefully recieved , thanks.

ALGAR of Southwark , ok , ill spend some time looking into that Breezie , thank you.And thank you IronSpike , there is a lot of similarity between those pictures , strange that the other one is unidentified too.

The closest coins i can find to it all come from the UK , this was found in the UK , ive searched the internet , Seaby's catalogues , the nearest i can find is it looks like King David l or Prince Henry ,after those two the designs in the crosss became stars.

Thank you both , its given me a fresh angle to research , ill update if i find anything else out.

It did look like a Robert or David, Scottish hammered, but the lack of stars, meant it wasn't.

Good ID Spike

Well , i looked into the Scottish coinage Silver Searcher and found the prior to the stars being used the Scots did indeed use the 3 pellets design and yes the rings also , i havnt seen anything using them as shown in the pic though.
For me , thats a Scottish King on the front was my initial thought , its so similar , had the coin not been so heavily clipped the legend would tell us much.
The example Iron Spike came up with is almost identical with the reverse, on mine the ends of the cross are beveled whereas the spanish doesnt appear to be , however the fact the pellets and rings are used in conjunction would seem to say Spain. Its just a matter of time now before i find the very King and his name.

Yes...I know the early coins of David1 copied the styles of the Norman King Stephen, but the coin you showed was a long cross coinage, which of course would have been after the 1100s, that would have narrowed it to a later Scottish King, like David11

Yep , thanks for your help with this , its eerily like an Alexanderlll or John Baliol profile but the reverse throws it out.The spanish reverse seems identical.

Looks similar to a hammered featuring Farnokk The Thrusting, who, in the Middle Ages was betrothed to Snatchella The Fetching.

Ok, Ok, sorry. Very cool find though!

I wondered about that too , at first i thought it was heavily clipped but now im not so sure, its just a smaller diameter than the silver pennies im familier with. Its 1/2'' , quite a bit smaller than the photo suggests,im not convinced its silver either, maybe billion.
