Hi everybody, its been at least 3 years since I've been on this site, and have left Bermuda and now live in Decatur ga , but back to my question I now find myself flying to Nassau every 8 weeks for 2 to work, but I'm trying to find out if I need a permit for detecting on the beaches and chest hight in the sea. One or two things have happened which have been from funny to ridiculous, but from what everybody's saying over here its banned, but from what I've read on the net it's ok to coin hunt on beaches and water as long as your not relic or treasure hunting around shipwrecks in which case you need a permit. The locals say without a permit its not legal.
On the funny side one of the hotels that I work in have hire rental boats and the lads out there have nicknamed me the shark-man, due to the fact I was chased out the water backwards by a 10' shark.
Now I can deal with the shark wanting me out the water, but the locals that's another thing especially if I've done nothing wrong.
as anybody had these problems in Nassau and if so how did you resolve it.

Never had a problem detecting but I arrived from a cruise ship. I was never asked about a permit. I hunted several beaches.

The good news is that I found two gold and two silver rings, but being harast by sercurity guards and the public is getting past a joke.
Ive now stopped detecting until I get this problem sorted.

All good there BOI. I go there every once in a while. Detected everywhere, no problems from anybody. Tell Richard (jerk chicken stand) and Kyla (changes in attitudes) there at the cruise ship beach that Chris from Cayman said HI. If you get dropped off or park at Cabbage beach you can walk to the Atlantis area. I had my best finds there but I did good at Sheraton/Casino beach also. I used to live in Alphatretta, Ga.

Good hunting,
Chris

Thanks Chris, for advise where to go, but its at the Sherrington / Wyndham casino I had the problems. I had a word with the sercurity guard that stopped me and told him the so called rules of metal detecting on the island. He informed me it was his boss that told him to keep metal detectors off the beach. He was ok after I talked to him
i believe my next move is to get in writing from the police superintendent office in Nassau that to metal detect for coins on beaches and in water to chest hight is allowed and does not require a permit. That should stop me from being harrast from doing what is perfectly legal over here.

It is a little difficult dealing with these types of situations when in other countries. I would NOT want to go to jail in Nassau. On the other hand, sometimes calling there bluff does the trick....Call him a BumBaClot BattyBoy, then tell him to go ahead and call the cops, you're not above the high water mark, they don't OWN the beach/water. If the cops do come, just play dumb. I actually walked through the Sheraton with my metal detector and went straight through casino to the beach. I used to park down a little dead end road that was next to a empty lot, then a couple small condos/timeshare, then there was the Sheraton. I would just work my way from there. Get out in the water and act like you can't hear them. haha. The security stopped me there one day too but she was telling me I couldn't drink a glass beer on the beach. So I chugged it and walked up to trash can threw it away, then started to metal detect. Good luck with it. Try Cabbage beach, you'll have better luck there anyway. Just watch for the sharks. And the idiots on wave runners.
