Hello fellow hunters and collectors. This is my first post.
I've grown up hunting arrowheads and relics as a child in the Yadkin River area of Piedmont NC to the present in Chester Co. and Lancaster Co. PA.

I am well aware that the photos I've posted here are certainly not the Paleo or Archaic points that we all cherish and admire. But I do think it needs a good look. The history of this item is as follows.

My father in law had this basket on a shelf for years and when he moved to a smaller home he asked his kids what they would like to take. I told my wife to ask about the basket and she came home with it. Those are US Calvery buttons on the top and one button is missing. There is some kind of tooth on the side and two tufts of horse hair. I have always thought that it might be some kind of prayer basket that a mid-western native made to pray to and seek some kind of spiritual power. 1870's? Perhaps he killed the soldier who wore the buttons?

Anyhow, has anybody ever seen something like this?

I don't have a clue about the entire piece, but I would think it's some type of hat and not a basket. By the way, the tooth is a Bears Canine Tooth.

I don't think it would be used as a hat because the wire fastening the button would have tangled with the hair.

Interesting article for sure though.

Looks like a hat to me, just my guess tho. Joseph

I think it needs further study. The button could date it. Do you have a close up of the button and can you get a back mark? Maybe then a musuem might be able to help with your very cool item.

quiet possibly the one of the best artifacts I've seen on this site. :icon_thumright:
