I guess I was just struck by the rows of dimpled dots, spaced perfectly apart in rows and did not seem naturally occurring.

Well does it look like its broken off or in half? If it is stone it might actually be part of a rare pottery stamp. I would say Check Stamp type of paddle but you say its stone and they did have stone stamps for pottery.

I think Joe is right.....especially after being worn in the ocean it made it look a bit different than a fossil found on land
