Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
Northern California. Found immediately near camp area.
Does this look like it may have seen discarded before being finished?
It's a hard stone rather than the obsidian and chert I usually pick up.

In the last picture, I tried to show the profile being flat on one side and humped on the other.
Thank for any input..I'm prepared to hear it's just a triangular shaped rock.

Not sure but that may be Basalt. It may be too small for a preform so I'd say an expedient, cutting/scraping tool.

This is the "bottom".

Most all of the stones in a mile radius are soft.

That's a tough call, I could be wrong but I don't think it's natural. Have you found any points, tools or flakes close by? Like you said they could've tried but discarded it.

Yes it in the immediate vicinity of an established camp.
Lots of obsidian and chert flakes and a few small points.

It's a piece of Basalt found all over California maybe from a core carried in ?

Funny thing..I have yet to find cores of any type of material laying around.

Do you think it was just byproduct of a tool that was made?

I'll stick it on the shelf and keep an eye out for something better.
The Basalt is a lot harder to see compared to obsidian.

This site produces almost exclusively small obsidian "bird points".
