Navagational Problem

I'm looking at a map dated 1863 . The bearings for a wreck are North by West from this rock ( ok no problem ) . But the second cross bearing is NE by E half E . Does anyone know how many degrees this is form True north . I will adjust for magnetic north in that year Cheers Nick

Get yourself a copy of an old marine compass rose. The 1/2 points will be
clearly indicated all the way around the card. Just remember that compass
points are not the same as degrees.

NE by E half E:
NE by E is 56 degrees less 15 minutes
NE by E half E might then be 56 degrees less 15 minutes less another 7.5 minutes OR 56 degrees less 22.5 minutes.

The correct answer to NE by E 1/2E is = 61 degrees 52 minutes and 30 seconds.
