NC Piedmont Region Points & Pottery Pieces

A long time friend of mine moved from the NC eastern coast to the NC piedmont area about 20 years ago. He happened to move to an area rich in artifacts and soon became an artifact hunter. On a recent trip back to my area to visit he stopped in my store and we started talking artifacts. On his next trip he brought about four large frames of his best finds which blew me away. Today he shows up for a visit and shows me 5 of the sweetest looking bird points you could imagine ( they were as small as a dime, made of dark material, and he called them Yadkins). He also had several larger points, a few brokens, and some pottery shards which he gave to me because I showed interest in his collection. He says he has several 5 gallon buckets of pottery shards and broken points and pieces at home. I thought I would post the items that he gave me and let everyone take a look. These pieces were surface field finds in Edgecomb County, NC. Any thoughts on point type and material would be appreciated. These are the first pieces in my weak collection and I didn't even find them ... but I'm happy ... thanks for looking ~ Jimmy

Re: NC Piedmont Region Points & Pottery Pieces

Hi Jim, I have quite a collection of Piedmont Points. Yours started out as points, but have been made into Knives/blades, It's difficult to type exactly, the first point I would say was a Morrow Mountain, due to blade shape and material, Its Orange Quartz, so that would make it Middle Archaic-5000BC-2000BC. The second Point was probably a Halifax? Material green Rhyolite, which would also make it Middle Archaic. Third point was probably a Savanah River due to the high shoulder, Brown Rhyolite, Late Archaic-2000BC-1000BC. The last peice is a section of a point/blade, also Rhyolite, As you can see the patina centred, its not an ancient break. I couldn't tell you about your pottery shards, I've never come across any, but I'm a surface hunter, not a digger.
Here is a pic of a few Middle/Late Archaic, Rhyolite points, rare to find whole, if you hunt on plowed feilds.
Hope this is helpful, Just my opinion is all. Good Luck Hunting Jim.

Molly. :)

Wow, those are great rhyolites!

Was used as a doorstop by my wife's grandfather and it was her great grandfather's find. He was a traveling preacher/historian who wrote a book about the Battle of Cowpens (the family lived there) and a bunch of other smaller booklets about history.

I live just across the VA-NC line in the Blue Ridge foothills. Always finding pottery shards along plowed creek and river bottoms. I'm in Henry-Patrick Counties, VA. Find some nice points and blades also. Just another extention of Metal Detecting I guess. Indian Relics are fantastic finds for me because I have never actually looked for them until this past winter and spring.
