Nearly Complete CW Saber Belt Hardware **Interesting and Disappointing Update**

Thanks to PBK, Buckleboy, and Plehbah for the ID!

It turns out what I thought was harness hardware is actually the remains of a nearly complete Saber Belt! I am missing the key piece...the belt plate! It's been a while since I have found anything significant enough to post.

I can't wait to head back and find the plate! It has to be there.

Thanks for the replies. Here is a good photo for reference, with arrows to the pieces that I found. These were all found in a 4x4 area, which leads me to believe the missing pieces are still there.

Also, this morning I noticed the numbers "572" stamped on the inside of the belt plate keeper. Any ideas of the significance of this?

the number is called a bench number.

Thanks Joe. Frankly I am surprised that I missed the plate, as these pieces were only about 5 inches down and rang my ears off. The grass was pretty high, however, I was given permission by the property owner to mow in sections and search. So I am headed on Friday to do a thorough search.

There is a plate there somewhere...Good luck to you in your search. I have come across about the same situation at the camp I've been hunting, but I haven't found that sword belt plate yet. Like you, I'm going to keep on digging.

I headed back to the site on Friday determined to find the belt plate. I found the brass from at least 3 more belts...but no belt plates. I was starting to wonder what could have happened or how I kept missing them. I brought a mower this time and mowed small areas to search them more easily.

Soon after the owner came by to see what I was finding. I showed him the brass and he then revealed a bit more history about the property. He said that when his father or grandfather (cant remember which) bought the property, the building was still standing. He said they found the sabers in the building. He also said that 10 or 15 years ago, he let a buddy of his metal detect where the building was, and he found a BELT PLATE!

I have a very large area left to search, but there were no belt plates in the area where the rest of the brass was found. If I found the pieces of 4 belts, shouldn't there be 3 plates left? Or did he find all 4 and only tell the guy about one of them?

Don't get me wrong, these are awesome finds, but I was hoping for the plates, so the saga continues. I imagine there is a lot more to come from this site.

One cool find on Friday was the top and bottom of what I assume was their flagpole, with woods bits still inside. Enjoy!

Those finds are not disappointing in the Least! With that many belt pieces, there IS a plate in there somewhere.


And getting both the top and bottom pieces of that flag staff is really incredible!


That ALONE would be a Top Notch find!


Don't worry about the plates! Sites are what they are. Some of my best sites have been bulldozed or disturbed, but you know it happens. You get what you can and don't beat yourself up about the rest. Besides, you have a GREAT site. Enjoy it!

I do think that your odds are good, since that flag piece came up. I don't know who could've left that in the ground. If they got within feet of it, they'd have known it.
