Nearly skunked

I was beginning to lose hope on this latest box of nickels thinking I was going to get skunked. On my 3rd to last roll I spied a 1905 V nickel....not in great shape...but my 3rd one to date...(3 shown below)still hoping for that elusive shield nickel...thanks for viewing!

I don’t remember the weight. There was some people on this site that said the shapes of the leaves were wrong, other than that it passes all the tests, ping test, magnet tests, still a neat fake because it’s a great replica.

I posted this a few years ago, someone on here said it’s fake because the leaves on the tree are different than the year, can anyone give any further verification? After a lot of research I couldn’t find any real good info on this potentially 100 dollar coin. If it’s real what grade do you...

Turns out it’s a different one, I have one of those as well , I don’t know where it is. One time I found a 1912 dime in the spare change at a gas station l.

What would drive someone to counterfeit a 1905 nickel? An 1885, maybe -- but 1905 is a very common date.

Good point....I've weighed nickels and found that quite a few are not exactly 5 grams...so I'm not sure that would be the marker for a counterfeit....there was a guy in the 1950's...who counterfeited nickels...he got caught when a bank teller, numastist, noticed there wasn't a mint mark above the dome on a war nickel....I think the counterfeiter's name was (correction) Henning, not Keane... but he dumped alot of his left over nickels in a river in New York...fascinating stuff...

Yes, I remember...I think it was in the general coins forum...I recall it was a 1944 with no mint mark above the dome...some thought it may have been worn off...I don't remember the actual pic...wish I could see it again...would love to own one...I think there were about 500,000 total that he forged...

Saw one post, August 1st, 2023 in today's finds...and some in 2024 coins forum...one was a 1945 war nickel, another a 1947 that had a mark on the R or the 7...arrgh... short term memory....but there were a series of dates that Henning forged 1939, 43, 45, 47 and 53?

Yes it was that post of the 1947 with the loop on the R on the back that I had seen. I knew about the war nickel counterfeit from the Red Book. The other dates i was unaware of until that post
