Detector(s) used
Excalibur II, Whites Spectrum V3i, and Explorer SE Pro
I have a question for all the experts out there:

I have been detecting for a little over a year, Do you know why minelab has so much cable to wrap around the shafts, is there a reason for the excess?
Why I ask is I clean my detector all the time whenever I go out and I can see wear and tear from constantly coiling around the shaft. Seems Minelab would run a little slack in the cable and attacch to the shaft so when you shorten to dive with it you dont have 12 ft of cable to wrap around 2FT of shaft.
Any thoughts?

I would say most likely for hip mounting the boxes, that or to form chokes (tight windings around the shaft to try to eliminate EMI (electro magnetic interference)

That is exactly what it is for hip mounting the box a option if you don,t plan on hip mounting the control box you can shorten the cable by cutting it and then splicing it together with a water proof connector but leave enough cable so there is no stress on it ,this is only for the Excal II

The exrta cable is for those that want to hip mount the controls and it is cheaper for them to make one detector for divers and beach walkers or waders. Divers should not hip mount the box for safety. It might help if you didn't unwide the cable to clean it and just rinse if off. Once the cable is wrapped it takes a set and you are forcing it to be wound the way it doesn't want to be.

Years ago we could order our detectors with different length cables and weighted coils just like we could order cars with what ever options we wanted. Now we are forced to have floating coils (White's BHID) to Chevy's with XM radio & OnStar costs added into the cost of our car.

Why are you constantly recoiling it around the shaft. I wrapped mine around my Excall shaft, and haven't unwrapped it except when it was sent in for a repair. I clean the shaft every time it is used by taking it apart and washing out the insides and shower the outsides, but I do not unwrap cable, just wash it down where cable is wrapped. The wrap does not overlap where the straight shaft fits together...

Hip mounting and wire fatigue ...access to extra cable for repair.

Although hip mounting is an option, I don't recommend it.
It causes fatigue on the cable causing eventual breakage. jmo

I used to hip mount but got sick of getting cables repaired.

When Wrapping your Cable... The way Treasure_Hunter does.. along with myself and many others...

As your wrapping make sure that the Coil is "Not attached" and free.... this way as your making your wraps, the coil wire is Naturally unwinding and laying
properly for your new wrap...

Then Tightly tape it up with Electrical tape.. Making sure that You left some slack near the control pod.. You don't tight where it will cause cable strain...

Pockets is right on. :icon_thumright: You end up with a nice wrap, and no stress on anything........I have slack at the coil and the controls,......
